Chapter 6 by porneia porneia

How does Sonja react to this twist of fate?

She tries to sneak into the Temple.

Though tempted to see if she could get a look into the wagon Sonja knows this gift of the gods has bought her but a brief window of time. She resolves that the breakdown is too a sign from the heavens, giving her sanction to sneak into the temple. Deciding stealth and surprise is her best option the she-bandit forgoes the direct approach and hopes the rumors of an underground river used as a sewerage system for the city are true.

Making her way to the outskirts of the ruined city, near its hilly side, Sonja collects the components for a make shift torch; a thick oak stick, birch bark, pine resin, the flint and steel she carries in her belt pouch, and finally the bottom half of her linen shirt. The torch takes a bit, but not finding the river, which comes down off the hills and goes into an underground aqueduct near an old and partially collapsed guard tower.

Most of the stones on the entrance arch of the aqueduct have fallen to rumble into the water below from years of neglect. Though the water is slow moving, and only a foot deep, the submerged stone footing is very slippery, making progress slow. Steadying herself against the moss covered wall, and thrusting her torch forward, Sonja careful navigates her way down into the darkness. With in a few moments the she-bandit comes across a large iron grate that was meant to block trespassers such as herself. Fortunately, a large hole has been ripped in the middle of it, and by the impaled skeleton wearing tattered armor Sonja surmises Khorbul forces used this path as a means of ****.

After going 50 yards, and nearly falling a half of dozen times, the she-bandit makes out a faint light far ahead. Putting the torch behind her Sonja confirms the light, the faint splashing sound, however, is more concerning.

What lies ahead?
