Chapter 6
by airwreck
What happened next?
The Gala dinner.
Selina hugged Bruce's trunk-like arm tightly, hissing and scowling at any young, attractive women who dared to approach them. Eventually the socialites gave up on talking to Gotham's richest and most eligible bachelor before everyone sat down at their table for dinner. Bruce waved down a waiter and asked to place an extra seat and setting at the head table for Selina.
"You are an expensive date," Bruce joked, holding the chair for Selina.
"Consider it a great deal in a long term investment," she countered as he sat down next to her.
"We shall see tomorrow night at the Iceberg Lounge," he smiled as Wayne Enterprises CEO Lucius Fox stood up to make a bad joke that everyone politely laughed and then a long introduction about Bruce and the charity. Lucius made one last joke, to groans this time, before Bruce stood up and took the microphone.
"Thank you, Lucius, for the warm introduction," Bruce smiled. "And thanks to everyone here for paying five hundred dollars for a dinner that's normally fifty dollars." The crowd laughed.
"To be serious for a moment, the Wayne Charity Foundation has been giving back to the city that has given a lot to my family. This year we want to help some of the most ****, victims of domestic ****. With your help we will build a new shelter where abused women and their children can live safely from their spouses." Bruce paused for a moment before continuing, "Until Batman beats their husbands up." Bruce smiled at the last sentence so people laughed at him bringing some levity to a dark subject, not knowing that he actually meant every word of it.
Bruce looked over to Selina and he saw her tear up.
"Again, thank you everyone for coming. Please enjoy your dinner!" Bruce exclaimed and he signalled the head waiter to start bringing out the food.
"You are a good man, Mr. Wayne," Selina whispered, leaning over to give him a kiss on the cheek.
"I wish everyone thinks that," he replied, forcing a smile at a local politician sitting at a nearby table.
"Oh?" His statement perked her curiosity. "You have a dark side I don't know about?"
He eyed her for a moment wondering if she knew about his alter ego. "Let's say there are people -- business people of sorts -- who don't like me trying to help clean up and improve our city. It would not be as profitable for them."
"We all have enemies, Bruce. Everyone. Even you, the celebrated son of Gotham."
He was going to say something but suddenly one of the double-doors to the banquet hall burst open.
