Proposal

Dazed Kyle picks up his phone to see what time it is. 3:23 a.m. ‘Man they are getting in late.’ Still in his stupor Kyle could hear a single set of soft footsteps walking up to his room door. There was also a drag against the wall and then a thump. Rather confused Kyle got up out of bed, threw on some pajama pants, and walked to open the door. To his surprize Jaclyn was sitting just outside of his room in the hallway wrapped in the couch blanket.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.” She said as she was slumped down on the ground.

“You know me… the light sleeper. You have had your strange moments but this is unusual for even you. What is wrong? What happened tonight on the date?” As he was saying this he sat down in his doorway next to Jaclyn.

“me… that is what happened.”

Kyle still just waking up but was even more confused. He knew that he had to be strong and be there for her now.

“Ok, it is early in the morning but how is that ever an issue? You are an amazing woman.” He put his arm around her and rocked her side to side to try to cheer her up. Though doing this only made her start to cry.

“No I’m not” as she sniffled “Everything was perfectly planned about the evening. Dinner was delicious. And then Mark proposed to me and I froze. I couldn’t say yes. I couldn’t handle it and I just left and ended up walking for hours.”

{kyle]'s heart was confused. On one hand he wanted to comfort his friend and help her try to figure out her problem to fix it and on the other hand he was happy that she couldn't say yes. He knew that Mark was a nice guy and had a lot going for him.

“But you two always seemed so good? You have been with him for years. I know you had your patches due to the distance but I thought all those problems were over.”

“They were and that is some of the reason why he proposed. He thought we would move together.” She continued to sob and Kyle held her tighter. “At first I didn’t exactly know why I froze when he finally proposed after the build up. I just knew I needed air to think and started to walk.”

“And?”

“And I realize that I am in love with someone else.”

Kyle looked at her rather inquisitively. His heart jumped a beat. He was both curious and hurt that he didnt know his friend. “But I have never seen you bring anyone else around. Have you even been hiding it from me?”

“I was even hiding it from myself.” She said with a slight sobbing chuckle.

“Now I am really confused.” Being even more baffled than before he asked “how can you be hiding who you love to yourself?”

“You know the answer to this as much as I did. It just took me to hear him ask for me to marry him and I realized that I would not be living with you anymore Kyle. And that is when I realized that I am in love with you.”

Kyle just stared at her glossy teary eyes dumbfounded. He was lost for words. He had always dreamed of finding a girl just like Jaclyn but never actually put actual thought into it being her. For so long he denied himself what he actually wanted he had forgotten what it was. In his mind it was just unobtainable and he was happy being just friends with her.

“oh god, what have I done. Not only did I ruin my relationship with Mark but now I have ruined...” before she could even finish the last words of her sentence Kyle reached to her face, brushed her messy hair out of the way, and so tenderly pulled her in for a kiss that she melted as her lips felt the warmth from his.
