Chapter 17
by WriterReader
Is there any problem reaching the School?
The plan works for now
It's a good thing that Eudora is there to assist you with the new armor. Even after the adjustments made by the Captain and his detailed explanations about how to wear it, it still takes both of you working together awhile to get the gear on properly. The weight of the breastplate and shield throws you off when you first wear it, it would be generous to say the tunics...or a better word would be that the rags you have worn all your life up to this point leave you little prepared for this. Its a good thing you have recovered as much as you had these past three days, or you would be on your ass within minutes of carrying this equipment through the streets of the city.
Giving one last look to Eudora as you pause at the flaps she smiles and bows her head to you a bit before you walk out to the sunset lit camp to find where Caderos has gathered his men. You are glad you took the time to put armor on properly because some of the men are clearly judging you, but then again being the bottom of the totem pole in the army isn't much different from being a **** as someone will be judging you. The attention shifts abruptly from you as Caderos starts speaking.
"Listen up boys, I want a good clean run, nothing fancy! No heroics, no deviating from the mission, none of that shit. If we get this right, we will be well rewarded for our work with anything we find at our target." The men respond with hoots and hollers, beating their shields and chests in a show of enthusiasm; he silences them with a sharp gesture of his hand.
"We are going to be sneaking in later tonight. The main **** has already started the push getting their attention, we are going to slice through on the flank and rush the school before they know what's happening." He lays out the rough battle plan and you find yourself nodding, better simple and direct than a complex one to your mind; anyway an overly complex mission would just make things harder to remember, so the simplicity of it makes you feel a tad bit better about this whole ordeal. "Remember," Caderos ends the briefing "teams of two, keep your partner alive."
"Rule three!" The men shout back in unison, and Caderos nods shortly and turns away to look at the stream of activity coming and going through the now open city gates.
"Rule three?" You mutter in bewilderment and apparently at least some of the others around you heard you.
"The captain's rules." The burly soldier on your left chuckles. "Best memorize them, Fresh Meat." On your right another even bigger man nods and recites almost like a mantra:
"Rule one: enjoy it while you can - strive for riches now,. You'll likely die soon enough, so get as much as you can to impress the gods in the afterlife. Rule two: don't kill unless you have to - when you try to kill people they try to kill you back, and every lost life means one less ****." As an afterthought he chuckles "Though you might have to beat the fight out of them first." The first soldier takes over.
"Third rule: keep your shieldmates alive - if you don't you're no better than a rat and will be killed as such." The crop-haired hoplite turns to you and whacks you in the chest. "Remember boy, we're just the sandals on the ground. The toga wearing lords don't give a damn who dies so long as they get their cut, so remember who your friends are." A third soldier, older than the others and with several bars on his shoulder that probably mean you'd better listen to him joins in with a wry grin.
"Think you can remember that, Meat?" he asks and you nod your head slowly. Well, least there are some rules to this madness; honestly as brutal and barbaric as they sound, it looks like you could actually follow them - especially if it means you don't have to kill anyone again though you have a feeling that's not likely a option.
As soon as the sun sets, Caderos motions with a jerk of his head to everyone around you and starts walking purposefully towards the city gates, the others fall in behind him smoothly and quietly.
At first you have a bit of trouble keeping in step, as you're not used to moving at that pace with all this gear your carrying but you do your best to keep in line. Well ahead and off to your left, you hear the strident calls of ram's horns, men yelling and the clash of metal on metal, the sounds of combat. Even as you peer expectantly in the direction of the combat, the other men close ranks uniting into a menacing looking corps and Caderos waves you to his side. You all take a knee waiting for five to ten minutes for no apparent reason until the Captain nods to himself and climbs to his feet.
"I think our hole's opened up." He tells you quietly as he pulls you into place at his right, and then loud enough for all to hear he calls out "Let's get going you dogs!" He heads up a narrow alley at a full run which you and every man around is **** to copy. It seems the plan is working so far; you don't encounter anyone willing to defend the city. The Athenapolis militias apparently have either rushed off to repel the main attack from the river or are stretched far thinner than they should be, leaving giant holes in the lines to pass through and finally you are outside the school. Its a good run, long enough for you to to be breathing hard and sweating to reach your destination, but to your surprise the longer you ran, the more accustomed you got to the weight of the armor and kept up with the troop without too much trouble. The School compound is surrounded by high white walls, and the wrought iron gates are closed and tightly locked, but this was reported by the scouts and your group came prepared; two heavy iron pry-bars appear and a pair of broad-shouldered men began to work on the decorative gates. While the entrance is being being **** you and everyone else get a moment to rest just outside the huge white building and the Captain offers a few words of advice.
"Right boys, listen up." Caderos's voice is just loud enough to be heard "We'll have to hold this position in the morning when those militia's try to regroup, but we have the rest of the night to settle in and see what we can find." He motions with his sword to the buckling gates "Remember the rules. Get yourselves some good loot." He adds as an afterthought "Food, wine and gold aren't gonna run off on their own, so I'd concentrate first on grabbing that sweet flesh asleep in their soft, cozy beds before you fill your bags with other loot, but hey, if you want to carry it do what you want." With a final muffled squeal of protest the lock that holds the gates gives and the doors to the compound swing open.
"This is our sugarplum, boys, strip it clean before anyone else gets here." With a quiet cheer, the men rush off in pairs scouring the grounds, some through the landscaped gardens heading to the small cottages separated slightly from the main building whilst others head straight to the dormitory wings of the the main building.
"Right then Adonis its you and me" Caderos says smirking up at the school "let's get going before we're left holding the bag. Now where should we look? The bed chamber wings are obvious choices or the kitchens where the servants will be busy all night long fixing soothing drinks for some pampered cunts too excited to sleep" he muses as you climbs the steps of the main building "although it wouldn't surprise me if they took to the basement." He adjusts the front of his loincloth under the girdle but you can't be sure if its because he already has an erection or its part of his narrative. "I once found this hot little blonde hiding in a basement of a manor, damn she was fun." He chuckles at the memory and looks over at you "What you think kid? Got any ideas yourself, I'm curious to see if this luck of yours holds out." His grey eyes look you over and you remember he's judging your actions so you'd best be decisive.
Where should you look?
