Chapter 10

Which way do you go?
Go left.
"Nothing ventured – nothing gained. Let’s get closer to them." You say as you point to the left.
Slowly the whole group heads towards the three-on-one battle. As you get closer you notice a strange orange rune on the ground and are immediately reminded of the elven woman wreathed in orange flames you saw earlier. "I don’t know what that is, but I’m pretty sure it’s not part of the regular town. Make sure you don’t step on it." You warn your companions as you point at the rune.
You get as close as you dare and then stop to watch the battle. The three human 'heroes' are barely able to block or dodge the attacks of the elven woman and are not even trying to attack her. It’s obvious that if they do not receive help they won’t last much longer.
'Could they be waiting for reinforcements?' You wonder as you watch. You never get to find out, however.
One of the three 'heroes', likely tired from the battle, makes a mistake while dodging and loses his balance. The elf does not forgive his error and kicks him in the chest with all of her strength (and likely some magic boost, too). The unlucky guy flies through the air about ten steps and falls on his back just a couple of steps away from where you stand.
You look at him as he groans in pain and see his eyes close. At first you think he might be dead or at least ****, but then he groans again and one of his hands barely moves. You realize that he must be stunned, or paralyzed, or some such, and seize the chance without hesitation.
You move to where the guy is laying on the ground helpless, rise the sharp rock in your hand, and with a single strike crush his unprotected throat.
DING! A now-familiar sound echoes around you and a wave of warmth passes through you.
Something starts glowing on the corpse of the now-dead adventurer. You frown and watch as the amulet he is wearing lifts itself up in the air, and then the corpse is surrounded by a cocoon of white light. You hesitantly touch the light and find it as hard as any stone wall.
"An Amulet of Anti-Looting! FUCK!" You curse as you realize what’s going on. An Amulet of Anti-Looting is an item that makes it impossible to loot the dead (hence the name). It is rather unpopular because it is rare, breaks after a single use, and you can’t wear an Amulet of Banking while wearing an Amulet of Anti-Looting. Sadly, this guy is one of the few to have chosen the latter over the former.
"You bitch! I’ll kill you!" An angry shout interrupts your thoughts. You look up and see one of the other two men rush towards you with an angry scowl on his face – apparently he saw you kill his friend.
In his anger the fool fails to notice the orange rune on the ground and steps right on it. A pillar of flames erupts from the ground and engulfs him, hiding him from your view. Moments later the flames vanish and a few pieces of partially-melted metal armor fall on the ground. Nothing else remains from the guy.
With both of his companions gone the third 'hero' stands no chance. He manages to last all of three seconds before he is cut down by the elven woman.
Suddenly, just as the battle you were observing ends, a horn sounds. Without hesitation the silver-haired elven woman turns and heads towards the place the sound came from – which seems to be the center of town, or somewhere very close to it. A quick look towards the other battle you saw earlier reveals that the elves there are also fleeing, with the surviving defenders chasing after them.
"What’s going on?" You wonder aloud. "If this was a sign to retreat they would head towards one of the exits, not towards the center of town where they can be surrounded…" It is a curious development…
"What now, boss?" Asks the waitress with pink hair. "Do we go after them to see what’s going on, or do get away from here while we can?"
You look at her as you consider the possibilities.
Where do you go next?
Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
