Chapter 37

Hail a taxi carriage? Walk the rest of the way? Another solution? Interruption?
Bring the cart along
You and Keyla bring have Aela take a seat on the cart you’ve been driving all this time. When she asks about the coffin, Keyla says her father is a carpenter who had been commissioned to craft it for a noble who died recently. She’s just bringing it to the family in Gerlangen.
Aela guides you to her house. By now the sun is high enough for its rays to color the sky in gold. Keyla puts up her hood, but you have nothing to protect you from the sun once she gets too high.
Luckily you arrive at Aela’s home before that happens. You quickly and Keyla dash inside, out of reach of certain doom.
You look around Aela’s home, you notice it isn’t a small house. Not a wooden hovel like you’ve seen so many others in this outer edge of Gerlangen. This house is twice as big as the others and made of stone. An obvious sign that Aela’s family does not come short on money.
“What is all that ruckus over there.” You hear someone say.
“It’s fine.” Aela calls back. “Just me and some friends.”
A door opens and a young woman with violet hair, dressed in sleeping attire walks in.
“Friends at this hour?” She says. “I’m sorry, but it’s too early for that. They’ll have to come back later.”
Aela is about to plead with this woman, but Keyla steps forward and talks to her instead.
“Please ma’m. Me and Sabine have been traveling all night. Your sister has been so kind to offer us a place to rest. I promise we won’t be of any inconvenience to you.”
The woman smirked and said “Thank you for complimenting me on how young I look, but I’m actually Aela’s mother.”
She then pulls away some of her violet hair and reveals her pointy ears.
Both you and Keyla are stunned. This woman looks not a day over 25, yet she has a daughter who looks nearly as old as herself.
Keyla facepalmed and started laughing herself. “Oh dear. Do I feel silly now. Must be the exhaustion.”
“If you like, I can sell you a potion.” Artemis said. “I’m a herbalist you see. I think I can …”
But as Artemis is talking to Keyla she is looking in the vampiress’s eyes. Keyla suddenly cuts the elf’s conversation off by having her eyes turn red and says “Let us stay over,”
Artemis stares at Keyla and repeats “Stay over?”
Then Keyla’s eyes turn back to blue and she says “Please?”
“Oh, alright then.” Artemis relents. “If you’re going to sleep most of the day, I guess you won’t be too much trouble.”
Wonderful. Leave it up to a master vampire to ‘negotiate’ her way into any situation.
You ask Aela if she can take care of Aegis and the cart with Keyla’s coffin. The half-elf promises she’ll take great care of your belongings, plants a kiss on your cheek and heads back outside.
Artemis guides you and Keyla through her house and brings you to the room her twin daughters sleep in.
“My twins are currently staying over at the high abbey, so you can use their beds.”
“Thank you very much.” Keyla replies. “Just one more thing.”
Keyla uses the eyes of the goddess again and gives a new command to Artemis. “Whatever happens, don’t permit sunlight to enter this room.”
Artemis absentmindedly repeats the last words, then leaves you and Keya alone in the room.
“Well, looks like we managed that just in time.” Keyla said.
“Yes,” You reply. “I was getting afraid the sun might have gotten to me.”
Keyla takes off her clothes and drops down on one of the beds and groans. “Mmmh, I’m so tired. I’ll go to sleep now, let’s talk again next night.”
She then proceeded to wrap the bedsheets around her like she was a caterpillar spinning herself into a cocoon. At first you found that to be weird, but then you figured it was probably a safeguard as protection against sunlight. Something that would help in case Artemis failed in the command she had just been given.
You followed Keyla’s example and wrapped yourself head to toe in the sheets, but they felt too constricting. After 15 minutes of trying, you give up and sleep like you’ve always done. In less than a minute, you are fast asleep.
You sleep throughout the day and wake up again the next evening. When you wake up, you notice someone is lying in bed with you. You open your eyes and see it is Aela.
The young half-elf smiles and says. “Good evening. Are you feeling better?”
“Better?” You ask half awake. “I’ve not been feeling bad.”
“Don’t lie to me, Sabine.” Aela says rather upset. “I came here to wake you up and you felt freezing cold. I know you’ve got a fever.”
Damn, the blessing of heat the Burning Rose gave you must have worn off. As you check yourself, you feel how Aela’s body is touching yours all over. Her legs are tangled up with yours, one of her arms lays across your back and one of her boobs presses against the side of your chest.
“I see. So you’re trying to keep me warm?” You ask.
Aela’s expression changes to concern and she says “Well of course. I care for you.”
You smile and make a prayer to the Burning Rose, the same one you preformed last night. In your mind, you see the Burning Rose, flames half as big as they usually are. She grants your request and your body starts to warm up.
Just like last night, the Winter lotus appears behind the Burning Rose again. She hugs her from behind once more, resulting the flames surrounding the Burning rose to shrink again. When the flames are but small embers, the Winter Lotus releases the Burning Rose and disappears.
This is the second time the Winter Lotus sneaks up to the Burning Rose. Can this be simple coincidence? You begin to fear there might be something more going on.
“Sorry for worrying you, Aela.” You say. “But by body has this weird habit of getting way cold whenever I fall asleep. I can see why you think I was ill, but it’s really nothing to worry about.”
“Oh my.” Aela says surprisingly. “I can feel it, you’re getting warm.”
Good, at least you got that covered.
You look over at the bed Keyla used and find it empty. She must have already left. Suddenly you begin to worry that Keyla might be feeding on Artemis, or one of her other daughters.
You try to get out of bed, but Aela brings her other arm around you and pulls herself closer to you.
“Please, stay a little longer.” She says lovingly.
You look at Aela. She looks so innocent and beautiful. Within you an urge rises to want to have her, taste her, find out what flavors her blood contains.
Do you check up on Keyla, or spend time with Aela?
