Chapter 5 by Jnightshade Jnightshade

What do you do?

You follow her.

You are to protect this group, especially your friend. You can't see letting Arielle go alone. You let her go and quickly follow. You do you best to stay in the shadows, but you fear she knows you're there. She looks back and smiles, then turns into an alley.

You peer from the corner and see Arielle approach a strange pale, black cloaked, man.

Arielle, with annoyance in her voice, says,"Ferat, why the hell haven't you been reporting!?"

He laughs,"I no longer work for the network, I have found other 'employment'. You have a choice Arielle, come with me and serve a greater purpose, or die and serve. I'll give you a moment."

"What makes you think you can beat me Ferat."

Ferat laughs, and pulls out a wicked long ebony colored dagger. With frightening speed he swings it at Arielle. Only she is no longer there. You didn't even see her move, but there she is three feet back her own dagger drawn. They circle each other, each testing the other. Finally, Arielle seems to have gauged her opponent, she steps in suddenly swinging her dagger. At the last moment Ferat vanishes into a mist Arielle's dagger passing through the space where Ferat had been. Arielle says something under her breath, likely a curse and turns looking for Ferat. He appears behind her. She spins as he thrusts his dagger. Arielle's dagger plunges into his leg, however, Ferat's impales Arielle's side. Ferat screams and disappears into a mist.

The wound on Arielle's side troubles you. It may very well be a mortal wound.

Arielle slows, one hand holding her side the other holding her dagger. She seems...focused. Ferat again appears behind her. With a hiss he bares fangs. You wish could draw even a fraction of your power to ward against the undead. You scream to warn Arielle. His fangs rip the skin on her neck and their is a sickening sucking sound. Arielle's eyes widen. She thrusts her dagger back and up. Ferat's eyes glow an even more intense red and then begin to burn. There is a whoosh and his whole body burns away. Arielle collapses.

You rush to her side. A woman you had not seen before, wearing dark acolyte robes steps out of the shadows and sits by her as well.

Your worst fear has transpired. Your friend lies dying, and you are powerless.

The acolyte next to you looks at you, "I must thank your friend, that...that creature was stalking me. If not for her I would likely be dead."

"She's dying. And, there's nothing I can do."

"Perhaps not. I can help."

"Can you heal her?"

"I am but an acolyte those wounds are far beyond my power to heal. However, in times of need my deity allows me to link with another cleric to share her power. I believe we can work together to heal her."

You are stunned. The acolyte's offer is both unusual and potentially dangerous. It would allow you to draw power from one other than Omaraha. To draw power from another could cause your fellow priests and even your goddes to expel you. And working the flow of power from a deity changes a priestess in subtle ways. Still you have a choice, let your friend die or attempt this dangerous ritual.

To heal or not to heal?
