What is this all about?
Return of the white knight
I freeze when I enter the living room. Standing in the front doorway--beside my mom--is the guy who tried to intervene earlier today, the one who stood between Lilah and me.
"Jake," says Mom. "Jake. Gary here told me some awful things. Said you harassed an innocent girl in the street, made her strip off all her clothes, even tried to rape her."
I want to deny it. It should be easy. Why would Mom trust the word of some random stranger over my own? "I...I..." I'm stammering. Mom's eyes narrow. She knows me too well.
"Oh...Jake." Her face crumples, the tears pouring down her cheeks. I take a step forward. "Get away!" she snaps. "I don't know you! ...My son. I...I have to call the police."
"They won't arrest him," says the man in the doorway, Gary. "What he did was perfectly legal."
"H-How?" my mom asks.
"Because he had this, the 'Writ of Free Use'." Gary produces an immediately recognizable laminated card. "I'm afraid you dropped this on the sidewalk when you fled, buddy," he tells me. "I figured it was from BoSS, and my friend in the Bureau confirmed it--and was nice enough to provide me your address."
He holds out the card for my mom to read, but doesn't relinquish his grip on it. Her eyes scan the fine print. "My son had this?" she asks softly.
"Yep. And like the horned-up teenage boy that he is, he immediately went for a random girl on the street." Gary frowns and shakes his head. "I didn't like that. I still don't. I thought it was a reprehensible thing to do. And I don't like that this card exists at all. But if it is going to exist--and in my possession--then it can at least help perform some small act of ironic retribution."
A chill passes through me, and my limbs shake. Suddenly, I know exactly what he's going to say next.
"Ma'am," he say to my mom, "I'd like you to satisfy me. Sexually. And I insist that your son watches."
