What's next?
confession
Mira's warm breath brushed against my lips while her question echoed like a distant vibration through the dusty quiet of the alcove.
For a moment, the world seemed to stand entirely still. My heart hammered against my ribs with a force that practically choked me. A date. An ordinary, classic date—words that sounded almost like foreign objects coming from Mira's mouth in this universe of chains, steel, and discipline.
A wave of pure, incredulous joy washed through my chest. For months I had watched her during lectures, admiring the way she structured her notes, how she furrowed her brow over difficult differential diagnoses, or battled her way through dry seminars with that incomparable, dry wit. Time and again I had caught myself lingering on the lines of her profile, seeking her proximity—only to banish those feelings in panic to the darkest corners of my mind every single time. How could I have ever dared to hope for more? I was the locked servant of my own stepsister, a man without a key to his own body, branded with a permanent tattoo and bound to a reality that permitted no conventional romance.
And now that very same woman was standing before me, carrying the taste of the kiss we had just shared, looking at me with a candor that left no room for doubt.
At the same time, ice-cold dread struck like liquid lead straight into the pit of my stomach.
Loona.
My stomach knotted on reflex. What would Loona say? True, she had integrated Mira into the dynamic, had permitted her to strike me and exert control—yet that had been the arrangement, the scene, the joint direction of a submissive. A real, private date between Mira and me, detached from the sessions and three-way encounters, belonged to an entirely different dimension. Loona tolerated no unauthorized detours. She demanded seamless transparency, and the mere thought of how she might react when I confessed that Mira and I wanted to go out alone made the surgical steel between my thighs burn with almost painful intensity. Would she see it as betrayal? Would she revoke Mira's access?
Mira noticed the shadow passing across my features immediately. She knew me far too well to misread my hesitation.
Her fingers slid gently down from my cheek to the back of my neck. She traced the pad of her index finger over the concealed collar beneath my turtleneck—slowly, reassuringly, almost protectively.
"You think too much, John," she whispered softly, her smile turning so profoundly warm that the last trace of resistance inside me melted away. "Leave Loona to me. We talk. She knows what I want—and she also knows that I have no intention of breaking you."
The certainty in her voice, paired with the faint creak of her leather boots as she shifted her weight, swept the last doubts aside. It was a gamble, a razor's edge walk between two women who held absolute sway over my entire life—yet in that moment, there was nothing in the entire world I wanted more.
Lifting a trembling hand, I carefully rested my fingers against the back of hers, which was still cradling my cheek. My skin burned with embarrassment, yet I kept my eyes locked with hers.
"I… I would love nothing more than to go out with you, Mira," I managed to say. My voice sounded rough, carried by a deep, almost stunned sense of happiness. "More than anything."
Mira's eyes lit up. That mischievous, superior spark returned to her features, mingled with a visible, genuine relief.
"Very good boy, colleague," she whispered, leaning forward just once more to brush a fleeting, tender kiss against the tip of my nose.
Then she drew back, gliding with fluid grace into her wooden chair, smoothing down her sweater. Reaching for her yellow highlighter, she uncapped it with a quiet click and looked at me from over the rim of her glasses—as if, in the span of two heartbeats, nothing had happened other than the world shifting on its axis.
"And now, back to our patient with the early diastolic decrescendo murmur," she said in a deadpan clinical voice, while the most radiant smile played around the corners of her mouth. "I told you that you need to be thoroughly prepared by Saturday. So, John: where does aortic regurgitation strike next?"
The walk home through the cold Berlin autumn air felt like balancing on glowing coals. The U9 spit me out at Schloßstraße station; every stride across the wet pavement toward the old apartment building drove the steel micro-casing rhythmically against my flesh, serving as a reminder that any freedom I imagined for myself was circumscribed by surgical steel.
Two worlds were warring inside me: the still-intoxicating memory of Mira's lips on mine in the quiet library, and the raw, instinctive dread of my stepsister's reaction. Hiding it was impossible. Loona read me like an open medical chart, and with Mira and her in constant contact anyway, any attempt at secrecy was a death sentence for what little leniency I had earned.
I turned the key in the lock of the Steglitz flat. The heavy door clicked shut with a solid snap.
"John?" Loona's voice called from the living room.
She was sitting on the sofa, laptop resting on her knees, a glass of red wine on the side table. She was wearing comfortable yet elegant black loungewear, her long dark hair falling loose over her shoulders. Her green eyes lifted, scanning me from head to foot, pausing on my posture. She spotted immediately that something was off—the restlessness in my gaze, the hesitant pause in the doorway.
"Come here," she ordered softly, closing the laptop and setting it aside. "Coat and bag off. Take off your shoes and kneel before me."
I complied mechanically. The chill of the floorboards bit into my knees as I lowered myself before her, hands obediently clasped behind my back, head slightly bowed. The scent of her perfume, mingled with the dry red wine, tightened in my throat.
Loona leaned forward, hooked two fingers beneath my chin, and tilted my head upward. Her irises gleamed watchfully, almost amused by my visible trembling.
"You are pale, little one. And you smell like the library… but there is something else." Her fingers glided across my lips, tracing the corner of my mouth with an appraising touch. "Speak. What happened at the Charité? How did Mira handle you?"
I swallowed dryly, my heart hammering in my throat.
"She… she was incredible, Loona," I managed hoarsely. "She protected me during the practical, diverted Dr. Weber… but she also made sure I felt who she was. During the examination, with her boot… and afterward in the library."
"And then?" she pressed. Her voice grew quieter, more demanding. "That is not all. I know that look, John. You look like you were caught red-handed."
I dropped my eyes for a fraction of a second before forcing myself to meet her gaze. There was no going back.
"She kissed me," I confessed, the words feeling like shedding my final defense. "In the library, between the stacks. And… she asked me if we wanted to go on a date this Saturday. Alone. Just her and me."
The silence that settled over the room after my words was absolute. Only the quiet ticking of the wall clock measured the seconds of my racing pulse. I was braced for anything: icy detachment, a flare of wounded dominance, an immediate reach for the implements to punish my presumption.
Yet Loona's hand remained steady beneath my chin.
A subtle tightening around her lips showed that she was weighing the information. Then a narrow, infinitely knowing smile spread across her features—not angry, but carrying a dark, calculating satisfaction. She let out a low, throaty laugh.
"A date," she repeated, velvety smooth. "So the ambitious Ms. Lindner doesn't waste any time."
She released my chin, leaned back, and considered me with crossed arms.
"And what did you tell her, John?"
"I… I said yes," I whispered, the heat of shame rushing to my face. "I wanted to. I have had feelings for her for so long, but… I also told her that I had to confess it to you. Because I know who I belong to. If you forbid it, I will cancel on her. Immediately."
Loona tilted her head slightly, her green eyes softening almost fondly over my wretched submission.
"Did you truly think I would forbid it?" she asked quietly. Leaning forward again, she brushed her knuckles over my cheek and let her hand trail down to my collarbone. "I told you on Sunday that she is perfect for you. You are my stepbrother, you are my servant—but I have no desire to lock you in a monastery. I want you to function. And if that brilliant, commanding girl makes you crawl before her while burning for her all at once, then that is precisely the fuel you require."
She shifted to the edge of the sofa, lifted her right foot, and placed the toe of her slipper directly against the contour of my trousers—squarely against the edge of the steel micro-casing. She applied steady, measured pressure, forcing the cylinder hard against my pubic bone.
"Do not mistake the ground rules, however, my boy," she murmured, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure will. "Friday evening, nothing belongs to you. In Schöneberg, you are our plaything. We will prepare you together. And on Saturday… you may take her out. As a gentleman. In a fine shirt, with impeccable manners."
Her smile turned wickedly sweet as she pressed her foot a fraction harder against the metal.
"However, you will not be attending that date as an unbound man. The cage remains locked. The tattoo remains on your hip. And you will spend the entire evening looking at her with the full knowledge that the key is in my handbag—or in hers."
She withdrew her foot and gave me a curt nod.
"On your feet. Go to the kitchen, prepare dinner. And then you will send her a message telling her how much you are looking forward to Saturday. Am I understood?"
"Yes, Loona," I breathed, filled with an almost unbearable collision of relief and a deeper, far more absolute captivity. "Thank you."
