What's next?
a real man
The night in my old childhood bedroom had been a single, drawn-out fever dream. Laced tight into damp lace, the steel cylinder pressing relentlessly against my pubic bone, I had lain awake for hours. Every time I shifted in the half-light, the padlock rattled softly against the wooden bed frame—a persistent, merciless reminder that my body was no longer my own. Loona’s promise of imminent release echoed through my mind like a sweet vow, yet the denied heat in my lower body burned hotter than ever.
On Sunday morning shortly after ten, I was standing in my father’s study.
The autumn sun was already high above the rooftops of Schöneberg, flooding unobstructed through the expansive, three-winged pre-war windows. Across the street lay the stately balconies of the neighbors, where Sunday breakfast porcelain clinked faintly.
I stood shivering on the broad, white-painted windowsill. My body was completely bare, save for the burgundy lace thong whose narrow strap cut wet and taut into the crease of my buttocks. The steel housing dangled heavy and cold in the harsh glare of daylight. In my right hand, I held a spray bottle of blue glass cleaner; in my left, a yellow microfiber cloth.
Every time I raised my arm to reach the upper panes, I clamped my knees together in a desperate reflex. Before me opened an unobstructed view of Viktoria-Luise-Platz. An elderly gentleman walked his dachshund below; over on the third floor opposite, an older lady watered her geraniums. A single motion, a passing glance upward—and anyone on that street would see what had become of the proud medical student from the Charité.
Behind me, the heavy mahogany door swung open. The crisp click of heels echoed across the herringbone parquet.
Arissa entered the room. She wore a dark-grey, form-fitting pencil skirt and a cream-colored silk blouse that pulled tight with every breath. Her red-lacquered nails held a cup of freshly brewed espresso. When her gaze fell upon my exposed back and the swinging metal tube between my thighs, an amused, derisive smile played across her lips.
"Well now, doctor?" she began with cutting casualness, resting her hip against the edge of my father’s massive desk. "Are we thrusting our backside especially far into the window today?"
"Arissa… please," I whispered hoarsely, not quite turning my head, cold sweat tracking down my temple. My cheeks burned with shame. "Outside… there are people on the street. Dr. Lindemann is out on her balcony… if someone looks up…"
Arissa took a tiny sip of her espresso and laughed softly—a dry, condescending sound.
"Then perhaps you shouldn't be so clumsy and polish the glass a little faster, John," she stated with complete indifference, gesturing upward with the delicate espresso spoon. "Upper left corner. There’s still flyspeck. Stretch properly. Lengthen your spine. And widen your stance so you have proper footing."
I swallowed dryly and obeyed her command. Reaching up drove the steel cylinder with brutal force against my irritated pubic bone; the lace straps chafed mercilessly over my pelvic crests. I stood straddling the sill in the blinding sunlight, my backside thrust toward the street, completely exposed behind the glass. My heart hammered into my throat in sheer panic that someone across the way might throw open their window and call the police.
Arissa appraised me from below with a look that degraded me far more than any blow ever could.
"You know," she continued in a velvety, conversational tone as she set the cup onto its saucer, "I always knew it. Ever since you were fourteen and I was changing your bedsheets. You were always a little, repressed deviant. The filthy videos on your laptop back then, the crumpled tissues under your bed… you always thought you were terribly clever."
She took two steps closer to the windowsill. The scent of her expensive perfume mingled with the pungent ammonia of the glass cleaner.
"To think you’d stoop so low as to let your own stepsister pack you into women's lingerie and lock you away like a prize sow?" She gave a derisive shake of her head, arching an eyebrow. "No, John. Even I wouldn't have credited you with that. A future physician… locked up like a mangy dog in his own home."
I bit my lip until the coppery tang of blood touched my tongue, tears of rage and impotence stinging my eyes. Trembling, I sprayed the glass again and buffed it dry, completely unable to muster a single word of defense.
"Do you have any idea how ridiculous you look up there?" she pressed relentlessly, letting her bare, manicured fingers glide casually over the wood of the windowsill. "Your father… Richard… now he was still a real man back then. Years ago, after your mother was gone and before that chilly Vanessa stuck her nose into this house."
She tilted her head back, smiling wistfully as though indulging in a fond memory.
"He took me right on this very desk, John," she said without the slightest hesitation, every word a calculated thrust straight into my soul. "He didn't bother asking. He grabbed me, shoved my skirt up, and fucked me from behind until files went flying off the table. He had fire in him. He knew what he wanted, and he had something between his legs you could actually feel."
Lowering her gaze again, she fixed her eyes on the small metal tube dangling between my thighs with razor-sharp contempt.
"And just look at you," she mocked softly, stepping close enough that her skirt brushed my bare calf. "You'll never be half the man your father was. Never. You couldn't even touch a woman like me, not if I begged you on my knees. You aren't a doer, John. You were born to obey, to bow your head, and to clean up filth. That is precisely where you belong."
Her bare hand rose. Casually, without the slightest haste, she brought the flat of her fingers down against the inside of my thigh. The slap stung sharply on the damp skin.
"Straighten your back!" she commanded with sudden sharpness, without raising her voice. "And do the lower pane again. There’s a smear from your wet thong on it. When Mr. Richard walks through the door later, I want him to be able to see all the way to Kurfürstendamm through that glass."
She spun on her heels and strolled leisurely toward the door.
"I'll set your father's shoes out for you downstairs," she called over her shoulder before turning the handle. "They still need to be polished with saddle soap. Once you're finished with the windows, come down to the pantry. On your knees, naturally."
The door clicked shut.
I was left alone on the windowsill. My breathing came in ragged gasps, my knees shaking so violently that the lock rattled against the glass. Outside, the elderly woman on the balcony stepped back indoors without having noticed me—yet avoiding discovery brought no relief. Arissa’s words had utterly dismantled me. My father was the master who took women; I was the whore in lace who washed his windows. And deep within my padlocked flesh throbbed that insatiable, illicit heat, pulling me deeper still into the bottomless abyss.
It took me nearly three-quarters of an hour to polish the massive panes streak-free all the way into the highest corners. Every breath burned in my lungs; every reach of my arm sawed the delicate lace bands across my hipbones. Down on Viktoria-Luise-Platz, the sluggish Sunday traffic rolled past, but my eyes remained glued to the glass. Arissa’s words had burned into my mind like caustic acid: *"Your father was a real man… you were born to clean up filth."*
When I finally slid down from the windowsill, my knees struck the floorboards with a dull thud. My thighs shook so severely that the small padlock clicked softly against the steel cylinder with every shift.
I crawled on all fours out of the study, down the long corridor to the small utility pantry beside the kitchen.
Arissa was already waiting. Having neatly rolled up the sleeves of her cream blouse, she sat on a low wooden stool, holding a pair of my father’s heavy, welted Budapesters in her hands. Beside her on the tiled floor sat a tin of black leather grease, a horsehair brush, and two white polishing cloths.
"There you are," she said dryly, not looking up from the heel she was inspecting. "Three minutes ahead of time. Over here, John. On your knees."
I dragged myself across the cool tiles until my bare chest hovered just before her stockinged ankles. My backside arched defenselessly; the burgundy lace clung wet with sweat to my skin.
With a solid clatter, Arissa set the first shoe directly in front of my face.
"Grease it. Thin and even," she instructed with that offhand coolness one uses to command a trained pet. "Mr. Richard expects a proper shine when he walks through the door tonight. If I see a single dull patch on that leather, you can explain to Mrs. Vanessa why you're incapable of maintaining a pair of shoes."
I dipped my fingers into the dense, dark wax. The pungent scent of turpentine and aged leather filled my nostrils as I leaned forward and began working the wax into my father's shoe inch by inch. My bare shins ached against the stone; my pelvis was pressed down so that the steel ring dug mercilessly into my pubic bone.
Arissa leaned forward slightly, resting her bare, manicured hands easily on her knees. With the toe of her pump, she casually nudged my cage aside—just a brief tap against the padlock, which clinked dully.
"How does that actually feel, John?" she asked softly, her voice carrying that cutting malice that made my blood run cold. "Just two years ago, you were sitting at the dinner table pontificating about your upcoming practical clinical year. And today, you’re at my feet greasing the shoes your father walks this hallway in."
I remained silent, biting my lower lip, working the wax into the toe cap in circular motions.
"No answer?" she mocked gently. Raising a hand, she dragged a single, red-lacquered nail across my bare, sweating neck. The contact made me flinch. "Never mind. One shouldn't chatter while serving anyway. You'd better hurry. Loona is already waiting."
I lined the Budapesters up neatly on the pantry linoleum, stroked trembling fingers one last time across the glossy black calfskin, and collapsed forward onto the floor. My knees ached with a dull throb, sweat burning in the open grazes.
Arissa rose, smoothing her pencil skirt with a fluid movement, appraising the work in the dim light.
"Very tidy," she observed dryly, setting the polishing cloths aside. A derisive smile played around her painted lips. "You see, John—once the nonsense is beaten out of you, you can actually make yourself useful. Back to the front with you. The ladies want to conduct their final inspection before Mr. Richard arrives."
I didn't rise to my feet. I knew what was expected. On all fours, I pushed myself out of the narrow pantry and crawled down the endless corridor of the Schöneberg flat, heading straight for the salon. With every forward drag, the burgundy lace cut deeper into my hips; the steel cylinder swung heavy and cold in rhythm with my crawl, while the padlock clinked softly every time it brushed the herringbone parquet.
Reaching the salon, a tableau of serene, absolute authority unfolded before me.
Vanessa and Loona were seated on the wide velvet chaise lounge before the fireplace, both with their legs crossed. On the low side table sat two glasses of water with fresh mint. Vanessa wore an impeccably tailored cream silk dress, her feet clad in sheer, pearlescent silk stockings, her pointed pumps discarded casually beside the rug. Beside her sat Loona, barefoot in relaxed linen trousers, studying me with that dangerously soft, possessive affection that disarmed me completely from within.
"Look at that, Mom," Loona purred softly as I crawled wheezing over the threshold of the salon. "Our maid managed the windows."
Vanessa tilted her head, her aristocratic profile cool and distant like marble. "Come here, John. On your knees. Right before us."
I dragged myself across the thick Persian rug until I came to a halt directly between the two women. My bare torso glistened with sweat, my hands were still faintly smudged with shoe polish, and my backside was raised defenselessly, strapped into damp lace that now felt more like a restraint harness than undergarments.
"Posture," Vanessa directed with cutting composure. "Straighten the back. Show us what this weekend has made of you."
I lifted my chest, pressing my knees together, which drove the pressure on my locked pubic bone to an unbearable degree. My cheeks burned with incandescent shame. To kneel before my own stepmother and stepsister like this—completely broken, reduced to a mere scullery maid, while outside the bourgeois pretense of my father's home was maintained.
"There's a good boy," Loona murmured, slowly extending her bare, slender foot. Her toes were soft, cool, and perfectly groomed. She placed the sole gently beneath my chin, lifting my head until my gaze locked with her dark eyes. "You achieved great things today, John. Arissa was full of praise for your submission."
"He was obedient," Vanessa confirmed coolly, without a flicker of emotion. She extended a foot as well; the smooth, silky nylon of her toes glided casually across my bare chest, tracing my collarbone before coming to rest right against my lips. "Yet obedience is no favor; it is your duty in this house. It is time you expressed your gratitude for our guidance."
I swallowed hard against the dry lump in my throat. The message was unmistakable. My pride, already reduced to ash, crumbled entirely to dust.
I lowered my head. My lips touched the cool, silky fabric of Vanessa’s instep. The nylon tasted of fine perfume and the absolute detachment of a woman who viewed me purely as an instrument. I pressed a trembling, reverent kiss to her toes, traveled up her arch, and closed my eyes.
"Thank you…," I whispered hoarsely, my own voice sounding alien, fractured. "Thank you, Mother Vanessa. Thank you for… for the lessons this weekend."
Vanessa withdrew her foot slowly, a faint, cynical smile grazing the corners of her mouth. "Very polite. You are finally beginning to grasp the value of discipline for an aspiring physician."
The moment her foot drew back, I felt the warm, bare skin of Loona’s sole against my cheek. She nudged her foot playfully against my lips, turning my head.
"And now to me, my good boy," Loona cooed with honeyed mockery as her toes brushed across my mouth. "Thank your mistress."
I parted my lips a fraction, kissing her soft, bare sole, tasting her skin, burying my face against her instep. With her, it was no cold chastisement—it was that perverse, comforting embrace that drove me deeper into dependence. Every kiss was a silent vow to surrender myself entirely to her will.
"Thank you, Loona…," I forced out, tears of powerless capitulation stinging my eyes. "Thank you for… taking care of me. Thank you for everything."
Loona let out a soft sigh, a purr of utter satisfaction. Her toes traced gently along my jawline before she lowered her foot and leaned forward. Tangling her fingers into my damp hair, she tilted my head back, forcing me to look into her radiant, triumphant face.
"Very nicely kissed," she whispered, her warm breath brushing my cheek. "You have become a wonderful servant. Now go get ready. Your father will be turning the key in the lock at any moment. Wash off the soot and put on your pleated trousers. But don't you forget who you are underneath for a single second."
"I won't forget," I breathed in a strangled voice.
As Loona pulled me up by the arm, helping me onto my trembling legs to guide me down the hall toward the bathroom, every fiber of my being was sealed. The bourgeois mask lay ready to be slipped back over my face—yet deep beneath the tailored wool, my flesh, my pride, and my will belonged irrevocably to the women of this house.
