What's next?
The rest of the week
The rest of that day moves in ordinary office rhythm. Emails. Revised projections. Short corridor conversations that stay professional on the surface. Cheryl keeps her distance in public, the knowing glance from the morning the only crack in the competitive mask. You catch her once by the printer; she simply says the southern accounts look tighter and walks away, the private promise from the night before still sitting unspoken between you.
Ruby seems off. The usual easy orbit she keeps around your desk has tightened into something more careful. She answers when spoken to, offers the same dry humour, but her eyes linger a fraction too long and then look away too quickly. Whatever is sitting under the surface stays unsaid. By late afternoon she has retreated fully to the HR side of the floor and does not approach again.
The rest of the week passes in the same strained pattern. Days of focused work on the final presentation deck. Late adjustments to the conversion numbers. Cheryl remaining sharp and professional in every meeting while the memory of her riding you in Conference Room B stays vivid every time you are alone. Ruby continues to keep a measured distance, the earlier attraction and near-misses now layered with something quieter and harder to read. Natasha remains closed off at home, the six-month dry spell unbroken, the careful rejections continuing as if nothing in your private world has shifted.
Friday arrives. The presentation is scheduled for late morning. The floor carries the usual low-level urgency of a client-facing day. You arrive early, the final slides locked, the thick residual awareness of Cheryl’s promise still present under the professional focus required to get through the next few hours.
