A text
The quiet after both of you finish stretches for a long minute. The mess on your skin cools. A thick, complicated silence settles back over the living room.
Then a faint buzz sounds from the kitchen.
Natasha’s phone, left on the counter earlier, lights up again. Another buzz follows almost immediately. She makes no movement from the bedroom to get it. You do.
You walk through to the kitchen, still half-undressed, and pick up the phone. The screen is unlocked from earlier use. A string of messages from Tanya sits at the top of the notifications.
The first one is short.
“Did you tell him yet?”
The second arrives while you are still reading.
“He deserves to know about the baby. You can’t keep pretending the dates line up with him. Ruby’s not the only secret you’ve been sitting on.”
The words land like a physical blow. Baby. Dates that do not line up. Tanya, Natasha’s sister, casually referencing something that has clearly been discussed between them for some time. The phone feels suddenly heavy in your hand. The entire evening - the watching, the shared orgasm, the fragile new openness - rearranges itself around the single cold fact now glowing on the screen.
You stand in the kitchen doorway, the light from the phone the only illumination, and look back toward the bedroom door where Natasha is, unaware that the next revelation has already arrived.
