Dangers and Desires

Seducing the underworld and playing a game of trust

Chapter 1 by netorarefan netorarefan

The hotel room door clicked shut, the sound swallowed by the thick carpet. He was still on the bed, a tangle of sheets and limbs, facing away from her. She didn't look back. In the elevator, mirrored walls reflected a woman with smooth hair and a neutral mouth, her clothes exactly as they'd been when she arrived three hours before. She pushed the button for the lobby. The descent was silent, save for the faint hum of the machinery.

On the street, steam billowed from a grate, ghosting around the ankles of pedestrians hurrying home. She walked west, toward the subway entrance half a block down as the city's cacophony pressed in—sirens, shouts, the rumble of a passing train. She reached up, her fingers finding the small nub of the earpiece tucked behind her ear. A single press.

Static. Then, his familiar voice, low and close. "That was a long one, Bella." The crackle faded as the signal strengthened. "Almost thought you'd forgotten about me." She hunched her shoulders against the wind that whipped down the canyon of buildings, a smile playing on her lips that no passerby would notice. He was there, always listening. But only when she permitted it.

"Forget you?" she murmured, her breath clouding in the cold air. "Never." She descended the concrete steps, the smell of damp and hot dogs rising to meet her. The turnstile scraped as she passed through, the rhythmic clatter of her boots on the platform echoing in the underground space. A train screeched into the station, its headlights cutting through the gloom. "He talked about his ex-wife. For forty-five minutes."

Marco's laugh was a warm current against the noise of the train pulling in. "Forty-five minutes? Poor guy. Don't tell me you gave him pity sex." The doors slid open with a pneumatic hiss. She stepped inside, the car mostly empty. She grabbed a pole, the metal cool against her palm.

"Of course not," she said, her reflection appearing in the dark window opposite her. "I gave him exactly what he came for. And nothing more." The train lurched, throwing her slightly off balance. Her grip tightened on the pole. "But you missed the best part." Isabella knew this was what her fiancé liked. The tease of what he had not heard during the static.

The train shuddered into motion, and Marco's breath hitched on the other end, a sound she knew well. "Did I now?"

She watched the tunnel lights streak past, a blur of white and orange. "He still wore his wedding band. Took it off in the bathroom." The train car smelled of stale beer and disinfectant. A discarded newspaper lay folded on the seat across from her. "He put it on the nightstand. Right next to my lipstick." She let the silence stretch for a moment, letting the picture form in his mind.

"And?" Marco's voice was a low rumble, a thread of tension woven through the words. "Did he look at it while he was—"

"While he was fucking me?" She finished the sentence for him, her tone flat, matter-of-fact. The train wheels screamed against the rails. "Every few seconds." She released her grip on the pole and sank into the hard plastic seat, the vibrations traveling up her spine. "He said her name. Not mine."

She heard a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line, then a low chuckle. "Classic. Did you correct him?"

Isabella looked at her reflection in the window, a pale face against the rushing darkness. "I slapped him. Then I pretended to be hurt." She shifted in her seat, the denim of her shorts rough against her skin. "Got him to fork up another five hundred. Told him I didn't need it if he fucked me better. That got his attention."

"Five hundred for a slap and an insult," Marco's appreciation was clear in his voice, a warmth that spread through the earpiece, bypassing the metal and plastic to settle somewhere inside her. "And you didn't even take it you slut."

"I wanted a good fuck not money. Got both in the end." She watched the station signs flicker past. "Almost there. What's for dinner?"

The train slowed, the brakes squealing. "Your favorite. And I have dessert waiting." The doors opened with a rush of air, bringing with it the smell of the platform—urine, garbage, and the distinctive metallic tang of the subway. "Ugh. Can't wait."
