Confronted by the women
The set up was nearing the end and the night was coming to a close. Marcus asked me to grab one more box from the main congregation hall. I went through the side door, not realizing I had been followed. The two women cornered me right there in the sanctuary, their voices low but sharp as they blocked my path to the exit.
"We know about you and Rachel," the older one said as she pointed an accusing finger. "We saw you sneaking around with Pastor John's wife."
The younger woman crossed her arms, her modest blouse doing nothing to hide how her chest rose with each angry breath. "You think you can just come in here and corrupt a married woman? A woman with a family?"
I set down the box I was carrying, looking between them. Both of them had that same tight-lipped expression from earlier, but now it was mixed with something else—maybe fear, maybe excitement at catching me in the act.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said, but the way they looked at each other told me they weren't buying it.
"Don't lie to us," the older one hissed. "We saw you leaving her house when Pastor John was out. We saw the way she looks at you during services."
The younger woman stepped closer, her voice dropping even lower. "If you don't stay away from her, we'll tell everyone. Her husband. The whole congregation."
I could feel the tension in the air between us. These weren't just church ladies making idle threats—they had actually seen something, and they were dead serious about exposing it.
"What exactly do you think you saw?" I asked, testing how much they actually knew versus what they were guessing.
The older woman's face flushed red. "Enough to know you're trouble. Enough to know Rachel's been acting different lately."
They were close enough now that I could smell their perfume mixed with the lingering scent of coffee and cookies from the event. Both of them were breathing harder than the situation warranted, their eyes darting between my face and the empty sanctuary around us.
"You need to leave her alone," the younger one said, but there was something in her voice that didn't quite match the words—like she was trying to convince herself as much as me.
The confrontation hung in the air, the weight of their accusations settling between us.
