Chapter 75 - Nancy
Mike lay motionless on the stretcher as the ambulance rushed through the afternoon traffic. The siren screamed above the noise of the road while the paramedic pressed a piece of gauze against the wound on the side of his head. Blood had soaked through part of it and continued to run down toward Mike’s ear. His breathing was shallow, and every few seconds his eyelids moved as if he were trying to wake from a deep sleep.
“Stay with me, Mike,” the paramedic said, checking the monitor beside him. “Keep your eyes open.”
Mike tried to obey. His eyelids lifted for a moment before falling again. His head was pounding, and every turn of the ambulance sent another wave of pain through his skull. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he could still hear the truck horn.
Then he remembered Mia.
He remembered the van pulling away with her inside. He remembered the man dragging her into it and the way she had struggled against him. Mike had run after the van without thinking, but it had moved too quickly. He kept chasing it through the street, hoping the driver would stop. Then he remembered the sudden appearance of the truck, the blaring horn, and the impact.
His fingers moved weakly against the stretcher.
“Mia…”
The paramedic leaned closer. “What did you say?”
“Mia…”
“Who is Mia?”
Mike tried to open his eyes, but everything around him was blurred. His lips moved again, but only a weak sound came out.
“Van…”
The paramedic exchanged a quick look with the other medic before turning back toward him. “Don't worry about that right now. You're going to be okay. Just keep breathing.”
Mike's eyes closed again. The memory of Mia being dragged into the van returned, followed by the image of the truck rushing toward him. He tried to move, but his body refused to respond.
The ambulance finally turned into the hospital entrance and stopped beneath the emergency bay lights. The rear doors opened almost immediately, and two orderlies rushed forward as the paramedics pulled the stretcher out.
“Male, early twenties,” one paramedic said as they moved. “Pedestrian struck by a truck. Possible head trauma. He was chasing a vehicle involved in a suspected kidnapping when the accident happened.”
The orderlies took control of the stretcher and rushed Mike through the automatic doors. Bright hospital lights passed above him as they moved down the corridor. Nurses appeared from different rooms, and a doctor approached as soon as they entered the emergency treatment area.
“What happened?” the doctor asked.
“Pedestrian struck by a truck,” the paramedic answered. “Possible concussion and head injury. He was conscious at the scene but has been fading in and out.”
“Get him into trauma.”
The stretcher was pushed into the treatment room, and within seconds nurses surrounded Mike. One carefully cut away the blood-covered collar of his shirt while another attached monitoring leads to his chest. A third nurse prepared an IV as the doctor examined the wound on his head.
“Blood pressure?” the doctor asked.
“One-fifty over ninety.”
“Pulse?”
“One-twelve.”
The doctor shone a small light into Mike’s eyes and leaned closer. “Mike, can you hear me?”
Mike slowly opened his eyes.
“Mia.”
The doctor looked toward the nurse. “Who is Mia?”
Mike tried to answer, but his voice was barely a whisper. “Van…”
His eyes closed again.
The nurse gently touched his shoulder. “Mike, stay with us.”
He opened his eyes for a moment but quickly slipped back into unconsciousness. The doctor checked the monitor before looking toward the emergency entrance.
A few minutes later, two police officers entered the hospital. They had followed the ambulance from the accident scene and were still carrying their equipment from the investigation. One of them approached the treatment area and waited for the doctor to step outside.
“Doctor, we're the officers who responded to the accident.”
The doctor looked at him. “Is he the driver?”
“No. He's the pedestrian who was hit.”
The doctor frowned. “Then what happened?”
The officer opened his notebook. “About an hour before the accident, Mike helped us stop two men who were assaulting a girl named Eve. He intervened when he saw what was happening, protected her, and helped us catch both criminals.”
The doctor looked through the glass toward Mike. “And the accident happened afterward?”
“Yes. About an hour later, Mike witnessed another incident. A woman named Mia was dragged into a van by a man. He immediately chased after the vehicle, trying to stop him. During the chase, a truck struck Mike.”
The doctor's expression became serious. “Do you know who the man was?”
“We're still investigating. That's why Mike is an important witness. He may be one of the only people who can identify the suspect and tell us what happened to Mia.”
The doctor nodded. “We'll do everything we can, but right now our priority is his condition.”
“Of course.”
The doctor looked down at the chart in his hands. “Do you know if he has any family?”
The officer shook his head. “We haven't been able to find anyone here.”
“We need an emergency contact. If his condition gets worse, we need someone who knows his medical history and can help us with important decisions.”
The officer nodded. “I'll check the case information.”
He stepped away from the treatment area and pulled out his phone. After searching through the information available to the police, he found a number listed under Mike's family details and dialed it.
The phone rang twice before a woman answered.
“Hello?”
“Ma'am, is this Mike's mother?”
There was a brief pause before she answered. “Yes. Who is this?”
“I am Officer Daniel Harris with the S-City Police Department. I'm calling about your son.”
Her voice immediately became tense. “What happened to Mike?”
“He's been involved in an accident. He's at Saint Mary's Hospital right now.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes. He's receiving treatment.”
A shaky breath came through the phone. “What happened?”
“He was chasing a vehicle involved in an incident when he was struck by a truck.”
The woman became silent for several seconds before asking, “Is he badly hurt?”
“He has a head injury. The doctors are treating him now.”
“We're in Westwood,” she said, her voice beginning to break. “We can't get there quickly. It could take almost a week.”
Daniel glanced through the glass toward the treatment room. “Do you know anyone in S-city who can come to the hospital?”
“Yes. Nancy.”
“Do you have her number?”
“Yes.”
The woman slowly gave him the number while trying to hold back her tears. Daniel wrote it down and repeated the digits to make sure he had them correctly.
“Thank you. We'll contact her.”
“Please don't leave him alone.”
“We won't.”
Daniel ended the call and immediately dialed the number she had given him. The phone rang three times before a clear female voice answered.
“Yes, Nancy this side.”
“Hello, Nancy. I am Officer Daniel Harris with the S-City Police Department. I'm calling about Mike.”
There was a short silence before Nancy answered. “Mike? What happened to him?”
“He's at Saint Mary's Hospital. He was injured in an accident and is currently being treated.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“Is he badly hurt?”
“He has a head injury. The doctors are examining him now.”
Nancy remained silent for several seconds. When she finally spoke, her voice was firm. “I'm coming.”
Daniel looked through the glass at the treatment room. “The emergency entrance is on the east side of the hospital. Ask for trauma room two when you arrive.”
“I'll be there.”
The call ended, and Daniel lowered his phone. He looked through the glass once more at Mike, who remained unconscious while the medical team continued working around him. The steady beeping of the monitor filled the room as the nurses checked his IV and the doctor examined his wound again.
Outside, the afternoon traffic continued to move as if nothing had happened. People entered and left the hospital, cars passed along the road, and the city carried on with its normal routine. Inside, however, Mike lay unconscious after chasing the man who had taken Mia, unaware that the police were already investigating the case and that Nancy was now on her way to see him.
