Natasha’s “Truth”
You push past the shock of the photos and the calm description of the affair.
“Four months,” you say, voice tight. “You have been letting her into this house for four months while I walked around thinking the problem was me. So tell me the rest. What actually caused the rift? Because it did not start with Ruby. Something made you stop wanting me in the first place.”
Natasha’s expression hardens. She crosses her arms over the robe and meets your eyes without flinching.
“You. And Cheryl. I have watched the way you look at her at every staff social I have attended with you. The way your eyes follow her across the room. The way you laugh a little too easily when she leans in. The late meetings that keep running longer. The competition that always seems to need one more closed-door conversation. Ruby did not invent that. She only confirmed what I already saw. You have been fucking her. Or you want to. Either way, you checked out of this marriage long before I ever let Ruby touch me.”
The accusation lands with the full force of everything she believes. You feel the injustice rise hot and immediate. You have not fucked Cheryl. The looks at staff socials were nothing more than the same frustrated awareness any man might feel toward a confident, toned woman who needled him at work. The late meetings were about numbers and presentations. The competition was real and ugly, but it had stayed professional. Yet none of that matters against the certainty in Natasha’s voice.
“I have never touched Cheryl,” you say, the words coming out harder than you intended. “Not once. Whatever Ruby told you, whatever you think you saw at those socials, it is not true. You built an entire affair on a story that never happened.”
Natasha does not back down. She simply shrugs, the closed expression still in place.
“I know what I saw. And I know how it felt to come second to whatever was happening on that office floor. Ruby made me feel like I was first again. That is the difference.”
You stand there in the kitchen, the kettle cooling behind her, the phone full of evidence still sitting on the counter, and the rage at the sheer unfairness of it all burns through you. She has spent four months in another woman’s mouth and hands because of looks she misread and a rivalry she inflated. The injustice sits heavy in your chest, sharp and raw.
Somewhere underneath the anger, quieter and less welcome, a small kernel of something else takes root. Revenge. Not yet formed. Not yet planned. Just the first hard seed of a need to even the score, to take back some of the ground that has been stolen from you under a false premise. You do not speak it. You barely acknowledge it. But it is there now, planted in the same moment as the rage, and it does not look like it intends to leave.
