The car ride home

Promise of more practice

Chapter 29 by MRJT

Mike opened the passenger door for Maya and waited until she was settled before walking around to the driver’s side. The late-afternoon light had softened into early evening. The supermarket’s staff entrance and the meeting room already felt a step behind them.

He started the engine and pulled out of the lot without immediate conversation. Maya sat close to the centre console, one hand resting on her own thigh, the other occasionally brushing the edge of his sleeve as if the contact had become automatic. The residual heat from the long afternoon of practice still flickered low in her core. Every small movement of his body in the seat beside her kept it from settling completely. The unfinished need—deliberately left hanging when his alarm had ended things—made the quiet of the car feel charged rather than empty.

After a few minutes of ordinary traffic Mike spoke, voice calm and practical.

“You did well in there,” he said. “The way you stayed close, the way you answered her about the theme—it landed exactly right. They already see us as the couple they want.”

Maya nodded, eyes on the road ahead. Her voice came out softer than usual.

“It felt… easier than I expected. Once I stopped overthinking.”

Mike’s hand left the wheel for a moment and settled briefly on her knee, giving a slow, reassuring squeeze before returning to the gearstick. The touch sent another quiet pulse through the ache he had left unfinished.

“That’s the practice doing its job,” he said. “You didn’t have to force anything. Your body already knows how to stay open with me. That’s what they responded to.”

Silence stretched again for a few blocks. Maya’s fingers curled lightly against her own thigh. The campaign details—filming in a month, possible at-home scenes, the repeated closeness Sarah had described—kept circling in her mind alongside the sharper memory of how close she had been on the bed before the alarm stopped everything. Leo had never brought her anywhere near that edge. The thought still carried guilt, but the cover of practice and the clear success of the meeting made the guilt quieter than it had been in the shower.

Mike glanced at her once, then back at the road.

“Provisional dates are in. Contracts coming in a few days. If everything signs the way it should, we’ll have a full month to make sure the chemistry stays this natural on camera.” He paused, the next words measured. “That means more practice. As much as we need. You’re not finished learning how far you can go while still feeling like it’s just preparation.”

Maya’s breath caught almost imperceptibly. The unfinished need between her legs answered the promise with a fresh, restless flicker. She kept her eyes forward, but her body shifted a fraction closer to him on the seat.

“I know,” she said quietly. “I… felt how much further there still is.”

Mike gave a small, satisfied nod, one hand returning briefly to her knee in another slow stroke before the traffic demanded his attention again.

“Good. Then we keep building on it. Today proved the practice works. Next time we won’t have an alarm cutting us short unless we choose it.”

The rest of the drive passed in a low, charged quiet. Maya stayed angled toward him, the residual ache and the campaign’s future demands tangled together in her chest. Mike drove with the same steady calm he brought to everything else, the deliberate denial of her release still doing exactly the long-term work he had intended. By the time their building came into view, the meeting’s success and the unfinished need had settled into the same ongoing story—one that already pointed toward more practice, more closeness, and the careful control he continued to hold.

Maya’s voice came quietly as the building came into view.

“Could we… continue the practicing right away?” she asked, the unfinished need still warm and restless in her core. “Before everything settles and I have to go back to normal?”

Mike’s hand flexed once on the wheel. He was already forming an answer when both of them saw it at the same time.

Leo’s car was parked in its usual spot near the entrance.

The sight landed like a sudden change in temperature. Maya’s breath caught. For a second the residual heat and the easy closeness of the car ride collided with the reality of her actual relationship waiting only a few floors up. She straightened slightly in the seat, forcing a brighter note into her voice.

“Oh—he’s home already. I can’t wait to tell him how the meeting went. He’ll be so pleased we got this far.”

Mike pulled into a space a short distance away and switched off the engine. He did not reach for the door. Instead he turned toward her, expression calm, voice low and measured.

“He doesn’t know we’re back yet,” he said. “And it would make sense to do some practice now. We know the plan for these adverts—home scenes, shopping lists, the kind of everyday closeness they’ll want on camera. We should use the muscle memory we’ve already built while it’s still fresh.”

His eyes held hers steadily.

“Maybe we can spend an hour in my apartment before you go back to yours. Just enough to keep everything open and natural for the work ahead. What do you say, Maya?”

The question hung in the quiet of the car. Outside, Leo’s vehicle sat as a clear reminder of the life waiting upstairs. Inside, the unfinished ache Mike had deliberately left her with earlier still pulsed, and the campaign’s future demands—more intimacy, more filmed affection—wrapped themselves around that need like permission.

Maya’s fingers curled against her thigh. The positive words she had offered about telling Leo remained in the air, but the pull toward more practice, more of the intensity Leo had never given her, sat heavier and more immediate.

Mike waited, one hand resting lightly on the centre console, giving her the space to answer while the choice settled between the car that meant home and the apartment that meant continuing what they had started.
