Chapter 65 - Connecting dots

Mike stepped out of the dorm building and let the heavy door swing shut behind him. The cool morning air brushed across his face as he stepped onto the sidewalk. Instead of heading toward the parking lot or the busy main road, he turned left and followed the quieter path that ran behind the dorms. His pace remained slow and steady, giving no indication that he had anywhere important to be.

Despite his relaxed appearance, his eyes constantly moved across his surroundings. He checked the edges of the sidewalk, the bases of the trees, the spaces beneath parked cars, and the concrete beneath his feet. He did it casually, never allowing his gaze to settle for too long on any one place.

Every few steps, he looked down as though he were checking for a crack in the pavement or something he had dropped earlier. There was a purpose behind every glance, but nothing in his posture suggested that he was searching for anything.

The sidewalk eventually opened onto a wider stretch of road. Mike slowed slightly as he looked ahead. The street was almost completely spotless. There was no trash caught against the curb, no pile of leaves near the drains, and nothing unusual lying along the pavement. The gray surface stretched beneath the pale morning sunlight, empty except for a few distant cars.

He turned his head to the left and then to the right, making the movement look as natural as someone checking for traffic before crossing. There was nobody beneath the trees, and no familiar vehicle waited at the corner. The only sound was the faint buzz of a lawn mower somewhere several streets away. Mike let his shoulders relax again and continued walking as if he had found exactly what he expected.

A wooden bench stood beneath a young maple tree a short distance ahead. Mike approached it, brushed a few dry seeds from the seat with his hand, and sat down. He leaned back against the bench and rested his arms along the wooden rail. The position made him look like someone who had simply decided to enjoy the quiet morning before starting his day.

For several seconds, he watched the empty street without moving.

Then his thoughts began to turn toward the past.

Claire's face appeared in his mind first. He remembered the bright smile she used to give him in Eastwood, the way she would wait near the edge of the bridge while he came after finishing his training, and the small conversations they used to have afterward. The memory had once been comforting, but now it only reminded him of how different things had become.

Another memory followed.

He remembered the day everything had started to fall apart.

Claire had been moving on Sam, and Sam's hand had been around her waist while lower body aggressively thrusting up. Neither of them had seemed particularly concerned about who might notice.

Mike had noticed.

He remembered the looks people had exchanged when they realized what was happening. Some had looked away, while others had watched with the quiet curiosity people always had when someone else's life began falling apart. The whispers had started soon afterward, followed by laughter whenever Mike was far enough away that people thought he could not hear them.

He had never confronted them.

Instead, he had trained harder and kept his mouth shut.

His fingers tapped lightly against the wooden rail as he followed the memories forward. The betrayal had hurt, but it had not destroyed his daily life. He had still gone to training, still attended classes, and still fought. Things had continued much as they always had until another event changed the direction of everything.

The Amateur Cup.

Mike remembered the tournament clearly. He remembered the bright lights hanging above the ring, the noise of the crowd, the sweat running down his back, and the constant movement of his opponent across from him. Clark had been faster than he expected, and the first two rounds had been difficult.

Then came the final round.

Mike remembered the opening perfectly. He had waited for Clark to make a mistake, stepped forward, and thrown the punch he had been setting up throughout the fight. His glove had struck Clark's jaw with enough force to turn his head sharply to the side.

The crowd had erupted. A moment later, the referee had raised Mike's hand.

At the time, it had simply felt like a victory.

Now, sitting alone on the bench, Mike realized that it had been much more than that. He slowly leaned forward and rested his elbows against his knees.

Everything that happened afterward seemed to connect back to that fight. Sam's growing anger had started soon after. Claire had become increasingly absent at the gym and Danny had suddenly returned and found Mia. Now there had been the bruises on Claire's face and all the strange changes that followed.

Mike had spent months looking at each event separately, trying to understand why his life had changed so quickly.

Now he looked at them as a single chain and his eyes narrowed slightly.

The first link had been Clark.

The realization did not come with a dramatic rush of emotion. Instead, it settled into his mind with the quiet certainty of something that had been waiting for him to notice it.

Mike sat there for another moment, staring at the empty road.

Then he stood.

His face remained calm, but his eyes had lost their earlier uncertainty. He finally knew where he needed to go.

He turned away from the dorms and began walking toward the other side of town. He passed several quiet houses, a small corner store, and a bus stop where an old man sat reading a newspaper. The streets gradually became less familiar as he continued, but Mike never hesitated or slowed down enough to suggest that he was unsure of his destination.

After several minutes, a different gym appeared at the end of the street.

Mike recognized the building immediately.

It was not the gym where he trained every day. The sign above the entrance carried a different name and logo, and the paint around the edges had begun to fade from years of exposure to the weather. The front windows were darker than those of his usual gym, and one corner of the building showed a patch where the old paint had started peeling away.

Mike stopped outside for a moment and studied the entrance.

Then he pushed the door open.

The smell of old sweat and rubber mats greeted him immediately. The fluorescent lights above him hummed softly, and the familiar sounds of a gym filled the room: shoes scraping against the floor, gloves striking heavy bags, and low voices carrying across the training area.

Mike looked toward the main ring. Several men stood together near the ropes, talking quietly.

He recognized some of them almost immediately.

They were the same coaches and corner men who had worked Clark's corner during the Amateur Cup. Seeing them here confirmed that his suspicion had not been misplaced.

Mike's gaze wandered around the gym, searching for Clark, but he could not find him anywhere. The main training area was busy with fighters working through their routines, while a few coaches stood near the ring discussing something among themselves.

Clark was nowhere in sight.

Mike let his eyes move across the room one more time before giving up. If Clark was here, he was probably somewhere deeper inside the building or in one of the rooms at the back.

He walked toward the reception desk, where a young woman was looking down at a clipboard. She glanced up as Mike approached. He stopped at the counter and rested one hand against its edge, keeping his expression calm.

ā€œI’m here to see Clark.ā€
