Time to Explore?
A week or so had passed since they landed on Haven. Work had been heavy but they were getting somewhere.
Fresh Water System - CHECK
Housing - CHECK (3 bedrooms in the landing pod will do for now)
Food - CHECK (enough ration packs for a year, plant seeds sown)
Fire - CHECK (turns out the wood from the tree's here burns way better)
Signs of other life - CHECK (distinct lack of mammal life as expected, but bacteria, insects and fungi - CHECK)
This morning was a big day for our dwellers, today they would explore deeper into Haven's environment, having only explored a 200 meter perimeter of the landing pods. The plan was to make a beeline for the tree's, around 1km away was a giant forest aching to be explored.
The forest air was thick and humid, a significant departure from the controlled atmosphere of the colony ship. Dense, alien foliage arched overhead, filtering the sunlight into shades of green and purple. Terry led the way, chopping through thick vines, followed by Emma and Captain Elise, who scanned the treeline for any movement.
"It’s almost beautiful," Emma muttered, wiping sweat from her brow. "Assuming something isn’t waiting to jump us."
"The air is breathable, but I don't like this humidity," Elise said. Her dark uniform was already dark with sweat. "Makes maneuvering sluggish."
As they brushed past a cluster of tall, reed-like plants, a cloud of fine, gold-dusted pollen was disturbed, coating the two women in a shimmer of gold as it adhered instantly to their damp skin.
"Careful!" Terry snapped, stepping back. He swatted his jacket. "Stuff is everywhere."
"It's sticky," Elise noted, brushing futilely at her forearm.
Initially, it was just annoying. But within minutes, the effect changed. The pollen didn't seem to affect Terry, who brushed it off easily, but where it clung to Emma and Elise, a gentle warmth began to spread. It wasn't unpleasant—it felt almost like a deep heating rub—but it settled heavily in their limbs, making their breath hitch and their faces flush.
A kilometer deeper, the sound of rushing water led them to a hidden grotto. It was a stunning oasis: a natural pool framed by smooth, black volcanic rock, with thick, green ferns drooping over the steaming water.
"Thermal vent," Terry noted, checking the readings on his handheld scanner. "Water is safe. Minerals look harmless, but it will take that pollen right off." He looked at the two women, noting their flushed faces. "You two wash up. I’ll keep watch from that ridge over there. I have a clear view of the clearing."
Elise hesitated, then nodded. The sticky warmth was becoming distracting. Terry moved to the higher ground, leaving the two women alone.
The water was perfection—warm and enveloping. Emma wades in up to her waist, the hot water melting away the fatigue of the hike. The pollen dissipated into the blue water, but the flush in her body remained, a residual hum beneath her skin.
She swam to the far side of the pool, where the grotto ceiling dipped low, casting the water in shadow. The moss here was thick, black, and slick. Emma leaned her head back against the smooth stone, closing her eyes.
Beneath the surface, something shifted. It was subtle at first—a ripple against her ankle that felt too smooth for a current. She opened her eyes. The water in the shadows seemed to pulse with a faint, soft blue glow.
Suddenly, a slick, coloured tendril looking thing, no thicker than her fingers, slid from a crevice beneath the waterline. It was mesmerisingly smooth, looping gracefully around her inner thigh with a gentle, curious grip. Emma froze. Her instinct was to scream, but something told her that it wasn't aggressive. Instead of a violent tug, the tendril emitted a rhythmic, warm vibration that synced directly with the pulse still humming under her skin from the pollen.
A second tendril shape emerged, looping around her other thigh, followed by a third that coiled gently around her waist, holding her in place. They were incredibly soft, slick with a soothing mucus that reacted with the heat of the water.
The vibrations spiked, sending a wave of electric sensation rushing through her entire nervous system. It was overwhelming—a potent, chemical surge of physical euphoria that stole her breath.
"Emma?" Elise’s voice cut through the steam, sounding distant. "Is the water okay?"
At the sound of the captain's voice, the tendrils simultaneously unwound, dissolving back into the black recesses of the rock with startling speed.
Emma gasped, her heart hammering not in fear, but in a sudden, crashing wave of disappointment. She gripped the rocky edge, her body tingling and aching from the abrupt absence of the sensation.
"I’m... fine" she called back, her voice shaking slightly, trying to compose herself.
She looked down at the dark water where the blue glow had been. She wasn't scared. What she felt was a secret, dangerous fascination. The planet hadn't tried to kill her. It had found her. And as she waded back toward Elise, trying to hide her flushed state, she knew with absolute certainty that she had to come back to this spot. She had to come back alone.
