Chapter 57 - Is he Danny?

Mike reached the calisthenics park in the early evening, when the last traces of daylight were beginning to fade, and the sky had taken on a soft orange glow. The heat of the day was finally giving way to a cooler breeze, and the park had begun to fill with the familiar sounds of evening workouts: the metallic clatter of someone dropping a weight, the rhythmic squeak of shoes against the rubber flooring, and the occasional burst of conversation from people gathered around the benches. Along the edges of the park, the outdoor lights had just started coming on, casting a pale yellow glow over the bars and creating long shadows across the ground.

Mike walked through the open gate with his gym bag hanging from one shoulder, looking around as casually as he could, although he already knew exactly who he was hoping to find. He had come with one clear purpose, even if he had spent most of the walk convincing himself that he was only there for a workout. After the long stretch of short answers, awkward silences, and growing distance between him and Mia at the gym, he wanted a chance to speak to her properly. He didn't want another conversation that ended after two sentences or another moment where she suddenly found something else that needed her attention. He wanted to understand what had changed between them and, more importantly, whether there was something he had done without realizing it.

He looked across the different stations, letting his eyes move slowly from the pull-up bars to the rings and then toward the parallel bars at the far side of the park. That was when he saw her.

Mia was standing beside the parallel bars, and for a brief moment, Mike felt a wave of relief run through him. She was dressed in her usual workout clothes, her hair tied back, and from a distance there was something familiar and reassuring about seeing her there. He almost smiled as he took a step in her direction, already imagining how he would approach her without making the situation feel too serious. He could simply walk over, say hello, ask how her workout was going, and let the conversation develop naturally from there.

Then he noticed that she wasn't alone.

A man was standing with her, facing her closely enough that it was obvious they were having a private conversation rather than simply exchanging a casual greeting. Mike slowed without really meaning to, and the excitement he had felt only seconds earlier began to give way to uncertainty. He told himself that there was no reason to read anything into it. Mia knew plenty of people, and there was nothing strange about her talking to someone at the park.

Still, something about the way they were standing caught his attention.

Mia had one hand resting against the parallel bar, and although her posture appeared relaxed at first, Mike noticed a slight tension in her shoulders. The man, on the other hand, seemed completely comfortable, standing with his body angled toward her and occasionally leaning closer as he spoke. Mike couldn't hear their conversation from where he was, and that bothered him more than he wanted to admit. He found himself trying to understand the situation from their expressions and body language, searching for some clue that might tell him who the man was and why Mia seemed so serious.

He took another step forward, then stopped himself.

Walking straight over would have been the obvious thing to do, but suddenly he wasn't sure that he wanted to interrupt them. After all the distance between him and Mia lately, he didn't want their first real encounter in days to begin with him barging into a conversation she clearly seemed reluctant to have in front of other people. At the same time, he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something unusual about the situation.

Mike shifted his gym bag higher on his shoulder and moved toward the edge of the path, pretending to be looking for an empty station while keeping the two of them in his peripheral vision. He passed behind one of the larger pieces of equipment and slowed his pace, using the movement of the other people in the park as cover. He wasn't trying to hide exactly, or at least that was what he told himself, but he didn't want Mia to notice him before he had figured out whether he should approach her.

From his new position, he could see the man's face more clearly.

Mike studied him for a moment, hoping that recognition would come naturally, but nothing clicked. He had never seen the man at the gym, and he couldn't remember seeing him around the park either. That didn't necessarily mean anything, but the unfamiliarity made Mike even more curious.

He looked back at Mia and noticed that she had stopped talking for a moment. She was watching the man carefully, her expression difficult to read beneath the fading evening light. The man said something quietly, and although Mike still couldn't make out the words, Mia's expression changed slightly before she looked away.

Mike remained where he was, watching them from a distance while the lights above the park grew brighter around him. He had arrived expecting to finally have a conversation with Mia, and only a few minutes later he found himself standing behind a piece of equipment, wondering who the stranger beside her was and why the sight of them together had made him feel so uneasy. The man reached into his pocket and held out a small box, placing it carefully in Mia’s hands. The change in her expression was immediate. Her fingers tightened around the box as she looked down at it, and for a moment Mike saw something he hadn't expected—fear mixed with a faint blush that quickly spread across her face. She glanced up at the man as though she wanted to ask him something, but before Mike could get a clearer look at him, the stranger turned away and walked toward the far side of the park, disappearing between the trees and the deepening shadows.

Mike remained still for another few seconds, trying to make sense of what he had just witnessed. Then, deciding that standing there and guessing would only make things worse, he stepped out from behind the equipment and called her name.

“Mia.”

She turned sharply.

The moment her eyes found him, her entire body seemed to tense. Whatever surprise or uncertainty had been on her face disappeared, replaced by something Mike couldn't understand. She didn't say a word or even wait for him to take another step. Instead, she turned toward the opposite exit and hurried away, clutching the small box tightly against her chest.

Mike stood where he was and watched her disappear through the gate. He could have followed her, but he knew that chasing after her would only make the situation more uncomfortable, especially when she had made it so obvious that she didn't want to talk. Still, as he watched the empty path where she had vanished, a dull ache settled in his chest. They hadn't had a proper conversation in weeks, and after coming all the way to the park hoping to finally fix things between them, he was left with nothing except the image of Mia running away the moment she saw him.

Mike remained where he was for a long minute, staring at the gate through which Mia had disappeared. The park suddenly felt strangely empty, and his thoughts kept circling back to the small box she had been clutching and the fear that had flashed across her face when the man gave it to her. Whatever was happening with Mia, Mike was now certain that the stranger was connected to it.

As he stood there, he began putting the pieces together. The system's sudden warning and the silence that followed had never made sense, and neither had Mia's strange behavior since the day at the beach. She had become distant almost overnight, refusing to explain why she had suddenly insisted they leave.

Then Mike remembered the new boxer at the gym, the same man who had harassed Claire before fighting Sam. He remembered seeing a similar figure at the beach that day, although he hadn't been able to see his face clearly. Now, standing in the park, the stranger had the same build and the same deliberate way of moving.

The pieces finally came together.

Mike looked toward the exit where Mia had vanished and quietly muttered, “Is this guy Danny?”
