The Road Ahead

Chapter 41 by TheArm TheArm

Lily cranked the radio to its limit, the bass thrumming through the car as if it could shake loose the thoughts coiled tight in her mind. The hum of the highway beneath her tires was a poor substitute for the silence she was trying to outrun. Break was over, and she was alone again, hurtling back toward campus and toward the gnawing uncertainty that had taken root in her chest.

She couldn’t deny it, she felt different now. Stronger. Freer. The threesome with Jake and his best friend had been a revelation, a metamorphosis that had stripped away the last of her hesitation. It wasn’t just about the sex—though God, the sex had been electric. It was the realization that had settled into her bones: connection mattered. Chemistry mattered. Strangers could admire her, flirt with her, even chase her, and it sent a thrill through her veins. But when it came to sharing her body, she craved something deeper, something that tied her to her partners in a way that went beyond the physical. It was the difference between being wanted and being known.

And then there was Jake.

The unease that had crept in before break was slithering back, coiling around her ribs like a serpent. She knew she could trust him. Knew it in the way she knew the sun would rise tomorrow. But knowing and feeling were two different beasts. The thought of him at that fundraising gala with Cassie, sharing a room with her, sent a jolt of something dark and twisted through her. There was nothing stopping Cassie from making a move. And Jake? He was desirable. Megan’s joke about swapping boyfriends for a night had been delivered with a wink, but the words had lingered in Lily’s mind, refusing to fade. Though she was joking. She was joking, right?

It was ridiculous, really. The idea that Jake would so much as consider leaving her for the touch of another woman was laughable. Especially when she was the one who had spent the semester exploring, pushing boundaries, indulging in fantasies, all with his blessing. She had never once entertained the idea of leaving him. Not even for a second. And yet, here she was, her fingers gripping the steering wheel like a lifeline, her jaw clenched so tight it ached, as a jealous rage burned through her at the mere possibility that Cassie might want more from him.

What was even more confusing was the way Megan’s proposition had landed. No anger. No possessiveness. No jealousy. Just… curiosity. A flicker of something warm and dangerous, like a match struck in the dark. The thought of Jake with Megan… her best friend, her confidante. It didn’t twist her stomach. If anything, it made her breath catch. Why was that? Why did the idea of Jake with Cassie feel like a betrayal, but the idea of him with Megan feel like… an opportunity?

She exhaled sharply, the sound lost in the roar of the wind outside. Maybe it was because Megan was hers. Cassie was a variable. An unknown. And Jake? Jake was hers, too. The irony wasn’t lost on her. She had spent the last few months reveling in the freedom Jake had given her, the thrill of being desired, the power of knowing she could take what she wanted without guilt. But the second the tables turned, even hypothetically, she was a storm of insecurity and fire.

Was this how Jake felt every time I’ve called with a new story?

The thought hit her like a punch to the gut. She had never asked. Never wondered. And now, as the miles stretched out before her, she realized she might have to.

Before she had a moment to develop her thought she heard a loud thump, and it felt like the bottom fell out of her car. She attempted to hit the gas and was met with a loud grinding sound. She panicked, believing briefly that she was about to die and pulled over to the side of the road. She took a moment to collect herself, but her stomach dropped realizing that she was in the middle of nowhere about an hour from school and three from home.

Choking back tears Lily ran outside to inspect the bottom of her car, as if she even knew what she was looking for.

“Fuck fuck fuck!” She muttered to herself. Checking her phone she found she had no cell service.

Lily sat back in the drivers seat leaning into the steering wheel and sobbing as the sound of cars flying by taunted her from outside. She had no idea how she was going to get out of here, no idea what she was going to do with her car, no idea how to even contact anyone.

A series of knocks on her window broke her period of self pity.

“What the fuck?” She screamed through teary eyes. On the other side of her window, Henry was starring at her curiously.

“I was driving back to campus, thought this might’ve been your car.” His voice was muffled by the closed door.

Lily swung the door open and fell into Henry’s arms.

“I thought I was going to be stuck here! I don’t know what happened!” She stammered.

“Hey hey, it’s alright” Henry was doing his best to console her, but the awkwardness was palpable.

Once she calmed down enough to speak coherently she told him what had happened. He offered to drive her back to campus and devised a plan to calm triple AAA to tow the car back to campus for him to look at properly as soon as they reached cell service. Apparently Henry knew cars. Lily and Henry loaded her stuff up into his car, and they set off. She was grateful for her savior and would have to find a way to thank him later, maybe take him out to dinner or buy him some weed or something.

“My friend says it’s the transmission. Not exactly an easy fix…” Lily was on the phone with Robert back at campus. Henry had just done an inspection of her car.

“I’ll come down there this weekend and get it towed back home. We’ll have my mechanic look at it. I’m sorry that happened to you sweetheart.”

“It’s fine, I’m fine. But if it gets towed back home how will I get home for winter break?” Lily was still high stress for no reason in particular.

Robert started talking but Henry waved taking her attention. He pointed at himself in pantomime and Lily moved the phone from her ear.

“What?”

“I live in Banner Point, I can just drop you off along the way” Henry told her.

“Yeah okay daddy. We’ll figure it out. I’ll see you this weekend.” She rushed Robert off the phone, wanting to rid herself of the whole situation.

“Don’t be silly you’ve already done more than enough for me” Lily told Henry.

“It’s really not a problem” he laughed “I have to drive through your hometown anyway.”

“I’d really appreciate that. But we’ll see how the next few weeks go.” Lily was starting to think that maybe some weed wasn’t going to be enough of a thank you.
