Was Nicole in the mood?
No
"I'm not in the Mood tonight, Babe"
The scent of lavender clung to the sheets as John pulled Nicole against his chest. His skin felt searing against her back, his breath warm on her ear.
"You've been a million miles away all evening," John whispered, his hand sliding down the curve of her waist to squeeze her hip. Nicole stiffened, her mind flashing back to the sterile office and the cold threat in her boss's voice. She edged away from him, the movement abrupt.
"I'm just exhausted, John."
"Exhausted? Or is something eating at you?" He propped himself up on one elbow, searching her eyes. "I've missed this. I've missed you."
"Not tonight," she murmured, pulling the duvet tight around her shoulders like a shield. John frowned, his voice softening.
"Nicole, you're shaking. Talk to me. Did something happen at work?" She closed her eyes, the secret tasting like copper in her mouth. The fear of losing him outweighed the warmth of his touch.
"Nothing happened. I just have a headache. Please, just let me sleep."
He sighed, the tension leaving his body, but the doubt remained. "Fine. But we're talking about this tomorrow."
