No escape

Chapter 33 by Levantin Levantin

Wednesday morning began with the same leaden weight in the pit of my stomach that had accompanied me all week.

Every step down the school hallway was a high-wire act. The resin cage sat firmly, but the thought that a single careless movement could give away the rigid contour beneath my jeans brought a fresh sheen of sweat to my forehead again and again. Especially because I knew Emma was somewhere in the building—and that she would weaponize any weakness against me in a heartbeat.

During the long break after fourth period, there was no escaping it anymore.

I was sitting on a secluded wooden bench at the edge of the schoolyard, my backpack between my ankles, scanning my notes for the next class. The cloying scent of roses announced her presence before a single footstep could be heard.

Emma came to a stop in front of me, arms crossed over her chest, a heavy binder tucked under one arm. With a cool smile, she dropped down beside me—far too close. Her shoulder nearly brushed mine. By reflex, I slid a few inches away, resting my hands on my thighs to pull the fabric of my pants taut.

“The calculus homework was spotless,” she began in a low voice, letting the surrounding chatter swallow her words. She flipped open the binder, tossed a stack of papers onto my lap, and looked down at me condescendingly. “Mr. Weber called on me, full marks. At least you're good for something.”

“You’re welcome,” I mumbled, my throat dry. “Guess that settles it, then.”

“Settles it?” She let out a sharp laugh, reached into her shoulder bag, and pulled out a small, unassuming object. It was a matte-black wooden cube with an engraved number on top—looking like a simple desk calendar or a decorative mini-clock for a shelf. She turned the block casually between her fingers and held it right in front of my face.

“Do you know what this is, John?” she asked softly.

Frowning, I stared at the plain-looking gadget and shook my head. “A paperweight? I have no idea, Emma.”

“Close.” Her smile broadened slightly, turning more venomous. She flipped the cube around, tapping a manicured fingernail against a tiny aperture no bigger than a pinhead on the dark front surface, nearly invisible against the shadow of the wood. “Pet monitoring. My mom set two of these up in the living room to see what the cats get up to while we're gone. Motion sensor. Wide-angle lens. Crisp image.”

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit in a split second. The color drained from my face, and my breath caught.

“It was sitting on the sideboard the whole time, diagonally across from the dining table,” she went on in a whisper, her eyes locking onto my dilated pupils without mercy. “Cleo was perched right next to it and bolted the exact moment you jumped up—that triggered the recording. No audio, and the lighting wasn’t great… but you can see everything. My hand resting on your pants. You convulsing like a frightened deer. And… that huge, soaked stain on the front of your light jeans right before you bolted for the door in a panic.”

She slipped the cube back into her bag with total nonchalance, pulled out her phone, and tapped the screen before flashing it at me for two seconds. The still frame showed me hunched over, eyes wide, and that unmistakable, dark patch spreading across my crotch. With a click, the screen went black again.

“You didn’t honestly think a couple of integrals would let you off the hook, did you?” she whispered, leaning closer and tapping a polished nail against my thigh. The bars of the cage bit dull into my flesh as I involuntarily tensed up. “The history essay for next week. Six pages of source analysis on the Weimar Republic. I want the first draft on Friday. On my desk.”

“Friday?!” I croaked out, my hands trembling faintly. “I’ve got two exams of my own, Emma. There’s no way I can pull that off—”

“Then you pull an all-nighter,” she cut me off, cold as ice. “Or should I drop the clip into the class group chat instead? Let’s see how Timo and the guys react when they see how fast you lose your head. I'm sure they’d find it wildly entertaining.”

The trap had snapped shut for good. No maneuvering room, no way to talk my way out of it against evidence like that. The video was absolute ruin.

“No… please don’t,” I forced out, keeping my gaze glued to the ground.

Emma smiled, satisfied, smoothed down her skirt, and stood up.

“Friday, John. And don’t you dare let me down.”

She walked off with a spring in her step, leaving me sitting on the bench with my head pounding in sheer panic. At home, Loona held the key to my body—and at school, Emma held the footage that could destroy my entire life.
