She looked up the moment he walked through the door.

Edward closed the door behind him and tried to act normal. "Yeah… I dropped Ana at her hostel. It was already late, so I made sure she reached safely. Then I got stuck in some traffic on the way back."

Elena nodded slowly. She didn't question him further. She simply stood up and said, "I was waiting. I thought you'd be back earlier."

Edward avoided her eyes. "Sorry. I should have texted you."

Elena didn't reply. She just walked past him and headed toward the bedroom. Edward stood in the living room for a few seconds, feeling the weight of her quiet disappointment.

He eventually followed her into the bedroom. Elena was already lying on her side of the bed, facing away from him. Edward changed and got into bed beside her.

Neither of them spoke.

Elena lay there with her eyes open. She had known Edward was dropping Ana, so she wasn't surprised by his absence. But the fact that he took so long made her feel uneasy. She didn't want to jump to conclusions, but something about tonight felt off.

Edward stared at the ceiling, his mind filled with guilt. He could still feel Ana's body on him. He could still smell her on his skin. And now he was lying next to his wife, who had been waiting for him.

The silence in the room felt heavier than usual.

Elena eventually closed her eyes, but sleep didn't come easily. Edward did the same.

Both of them lay there in the dark, each lost in their own thoughts — unaware that the cracks in their marriage were slowly becoming impossible to ignore.
