A Sister's Secret

Chapter 4 by NudeBare NudeBare

The next day, I drove to Caroline’s gallery. The morning sun is bright, the sky clear, the air crisp. It’s the kind of day that makes you believe anything is possible.

And anything is possible.

The gallery is small, intimate, the kind of place where you can have a private conversation without being overheard. Caroline is waiting for me at the entrance. She’s nervous, her hands clasped in front of her, her eyes darting around the room.

“Ruth, thank you for coming.”

“Of course. What did you want to show me?”

She leads me to the back of the gallery, to a small room filled with paintings. But these aren’t ordinary paintings. These are paintings of pets. Nude, collared, owned. And in the center of the room, there’s a painting of a man I don’t recognize.

“Who is this?” I ask.

Caroline takes a deep breath. “This is Bud. He’s been my pet for twenty years. I’ve been hiding him from everyone. From Mother. From Alex. From Jay. From you.”

I stare at the painting, then at her. “You’ve had a pet for twenty years? And you never told anyone?”

“I was afraid. I was ashamed. I was terrified of what people would think. But then I saw you. I saw what you were doing. I saw how brave you were. And I realized I couldn’t hide anymore. I couldn’t pretend anymore.”

She leads me to another room. Bud is waiting there, completely naked, a silver collar around his neck. He’s in his sixties, his body marked by age and sterilization scars. He kneels as we enter, his head bowed.

“Bud, this is my sister Ruth.”

Bud looks up. “It’s an honor to meet you, Ms. Copeland.”

I kneel before him, taking his face in my hands. “You’re a pet. You’ve been Caroline’s pet for twenty years. And you chose this?”

“I chose this. I wanted this. I needed this. Caroline gave me purpose. She gave me my belongings. She gave me freedom.”

I feel a surge of emotion. My sister, the one who always hid, who always kept secrets, who was always afraid of being seen—she’s been a part of the Paradigm this whole time. She’s been living the life I’ve always wanted.

“Caroline, I’m so proud of you.”

She starts to cry. “I was so scared. I was so scared of what you’d think. Of what everyone would think. But I’m done hiding. I’m done being afraid.”

I take her hand. “You’re not hiding anymore. You’re finally being seen. And that’s the most beautiful thing in the world.”
