The Other Side 2
The sun rose over the city like any other day, but for dozens of families, the world had already ended.
Sarah Ellison sat at her kitchen table, untouched coffee growing cold in front of her. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying through the night. She stared at her phone, willing it to ring.
Mara’s last text — sent at 9:12 a.m. yesterday — still sat on the screen:
Sarah had not slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw her daughter’s smiling face. Across the street, Carla Ramirez sat on her front porch in a robe, clutching a mug of tea that had gone stone cold. Her husband paced behind her, speaking rapidly in Spanish to someone on the phone. She had left Sofia’s bedroom light on all night, as if leaving it on might somehow bring her Home.
In the Patel household, Priya and her husband sat on the couch in stunned silence while Hannah and Noah’s younger siblings asked over and over where their big sister and brother were.
At the Bennett house, Mark Bennett stood in the driveway in yesterday’s clothes, watching as more police cars arrived at the school across the street. Chloe’s older brother sat on the curb, head in his hands.
East High School – 7:45 AM
The school parking lot had become a war zone of emotion. Dozens of parents crowded near the front entrance. Some were crying openly. Others shouted at the principal and police officers. News vans with tall satellite antennas lined the street, their bright lights cutting through the morning haze.
Principal Ramirez stood on the steps, looking like he had aged ten years overnight, microphone shoved in his face by multiple reporters.
“We are working closely with law enforcement,” he repeated for the tenth time, voice hoarse. “Both buses left the school on schedule yesterday morning. We have been unable to reach any chaperones at this time.” The principal swallowed hard. “We… we are treating this as a critical missing persons situation.”
Local News – Channel 7 Morning Broadcast
The anchor looked grave as the chyron at the bottom of the screen screamed: BREAKING: MASS DISAPPEARANCE – 55 STUDENTS & TEACHERS VANISH ON FIELD TRIP
“Good morning, this is an ongoing developing story out of city. An entire East High class field trip to Oak Grove Historical Village has vanished without a trace. Fifty-seven people, fifty-three students and four adults, left the school yesterday morning and never returned save for the two bus drivers.
“Police say both buses arrived at the village, but sometime between getting off the bus, and meeting village staff, the entire group disappeared, with village staff member saying they never saw anyone from the school.
“I honestly just thought they were running late or had to cancel,” a staff member said on camera.
“Several personal belongings were found scattered across the grounds, but there are no signs of struggle, no witnesses, and no ransom demands.”
“Families are desperate for answers…”
The broadcast cut to footage of Sarah Ellison standing outside the school, tears streaming down her face as she spoke to a reporter. “My daughter Mara is my only child,” she said, voice breaking. “She was so excited about this trip. Please… if anyone knows anything, please help us.”
The camera panned across other parents. Carla Ramirez sobbing, Priya Patel clutching a photo of Hannah and Noah, Brooke Callahan’s mother staring blankly into the distance.
Back in the studio, the anchor continued solemnly: “Law enforcement has declared this an active investigation. The FBI has also been called in. As of this morning, there is still no trace of the missing students and teachers.”
In his quiet warehouse on the outskirts of city, Elias Crowe sat on his leather couch between the motionless forms of Mara and Sofia, sipping coffee while watching the live news coverage on the large television.
A faint, satisfied smile touched his lips. He reached over and gently stroked Mara’s bare thigh
“They’re already calling it a mystery,” he said softly to the two frozen girls. “They have no idea how perfect this really is.”
Mara’s joyful expression and Sofia’s gentle smile remained unchanged.
The world outside was falling apart… And Elias Crowe had never felt more at peace.
