Meanwhile at The Hospital

Chapter 8 by incrediblyordinary11

Barbara was annoyed.

"You want to talk to my prospective intern?" She accused.

She was dressed in a hospital gown, one of the many injured in Doris’ rampage. The worst of them, with crush injuries, internal bleeding, and the early signs of compartment syndrome from being trapped beneath the fallen stone. The staff at Gateway General had kept her overnight for observation.

It had taken Diana three days of persistent effort to get in to see her. She had missed an interview on The Late Show about her work with the Asteria Initiative, a women’s advocacy organization operating in Kazakhstan. She told them she had urgent business related to one of her villains, but that wasn’t the whole truth.

The whole truth was that she didn’t know what to do.

It was an unusual feeling. Uncertainty. Even as a child she'd been filled with purpose. The urge to excel, to conquer, to become the best. Now she felt? Listless. Confused. She should have seen the sneak attack coming. She should have prevented the attack by Giganta in the first place. She should be better.

Uncertainty, anxiety, self doubt gnawed at her mind like a termite in dead wood. She didn't like it. She didn't understand it.

She only knew she needed to find Jack Jordan. It was important.

So she went to the one person who had seen him last.

"I need to him Barbara. It is important," Diana told her friend; holding out her arm to prove it. The writing had faded in the last few days, it was uncertain. But the mandate was clear.

"I have no idea what you're showing me babe," Barbara said skeptically.

"A note while I was unconscious. A command to see him," Diana stated simply. "It involved Circe," she added helpfully.

"Circe, the myth?"

"Circe the witch."

Barbara chewed her fingernail. It was an unladylike motion that Diana found adorable.

"Alright, I'll set you up on your little date," Barbara said after considering. "On one condition."

Diana waited for her friend to explain. The antiseptic beeping of the hospital humming in the background.

"Get me the hell out of here."
