Do you make it in time?
Yes
The ceremony was deceptively simple and you are able to get it set up.
A part of you was worried, in this pact diagram of salt lines, the sacrifice and the pact maker circle took up the same spot, the pack maker Circle incompassing the sacrifice Circle.
The last candle lit and you took your place.
" I change for those I love." It was a simple incantation probably one of the shortest you've ever heard. "I give only myself and expect to receive only the same."
Something tore inside your body like there was somebody's hand gripped around your spine... Or your soul.
For one brilliant second there was a flash and you saw a face weeping, 'Thank you child, you will bring them hope.'
Then the pain was back and you blacked out.
Only one thought percolated up through the pain and the noise of rushing boots you could hear in the distance 'where did the salt lines go?'
Before your face Hit the Dirt and you know no more.
---
You woke up sometime later in your mother's old hospital, now run by her assistant.
She died spending too much of her own life force trying to heal a patient, something she had promised your father she wouldn't do.
Groggy with a slowly clearing mind you are happy to notice that there were no cuffs on you.
However you did notice the two new tattoos on both your wrists.
"gguugh!" Your scream would probably alert the nurses that you were awake, but you didn't care much.
A pounding headache reverberated through you as understanding, on an instinctual soul-bound level, blossomed.
You knew what those tattoos meant.
Your left hand would be used to pull people back from the brink it, was the hand you would heal with.
With the right hand, you would go to war.
The tears in your eyes are only partially from the knowledge, it may only be the gifts of the initial pact, but it had worked you had succeeded.
You found your answer.
"Son!"
Turns out the nurses weren't the only ones alerted by your scream.
It was your father.
He rushed in and gave you a hug, the scream and a dazed look must have been concerning, but you were alive.
You went to hide your arms, in case they had questions about the tattoos, but you needn't bother, because as soon a thought to cover them occured, they faded.
"Hey Dad, sorry about the scare, what happened, last thing I remember was falling over?"
"What happened was that damn fool friend of yours decided to play a prank and the entire constabulary rushed out to your little glade! The only reason his own father didn't ring his neck for his prank, was they found you apparently having fallen out of one of your trees."
" What prank was he playing I appreciate the accidental save, but I wouldn't really call it a prank if he had the entire constabulary mobilized!? "
" The idiot said you were in possession of contraband literature of a lost God and planned to follow the ritual. When they got out there all they saw was you, face in the dirt. There were no regents, no circle, and no book. Hell they even searched our house after he was insistent, now for his trouble he's been volunteered to clean the jails. "
