The Last Ride
The Extreme Ride – a whirling, spinning beast that flipped you upside down – looked like a metal monster. The open-air seats, secured with chest straps but leaving your legs free, did nothing to ease my anxiety. My thoughts were consumed by one thing: my legs and my dress.
“This is going to be wild,” I muttered, the words feeling thin even to my own ears as we approached the loading area.
"Last chance to back out," Chloe teased, her voice far too cheerful, already strapped in and waiting for the attendant.
“No way, we’re finishing what we started.” My heart hammered against my ribs as I stood by my seat, willing myself to be brave. The chest strap clicked into place with a disconcerting finality. There was no going back now.
The operator mumbled through a safety briefing that dissolved into meaningless noise over the frantic thudding in my ears. Then the music hit—a jarring, insistent bass line—and our section began its agonizing ascent. Slowly, inexorably, it tilted backward, the world shifting until gravity became a terrifying betrayer.
My stomach lurched violently as we passed vertical. A dizzying moment where everything felt wrong-side up. Then centrifugal force slammed me against the restraints as the ride’s arms started to spin. The world dissolved into a chaotic blur—streaks of blue sky, flashes of green trees, distorted screams, a relentless wash of color…
The only anchors in that swirling chaos were me and Chloe. I risked a glance down, desperate for any sign of control.
