Play it down

Before I could answer honestly – before I could admit the uncomfortable truth that had been swirling in my mind – my devious side took over. I needed to downplay it, deflect her anxiety, but also secretly bask in the memory of those glances.

"I'm sure they didn’t see anything," I said, forcing a breezy tone into my voice and deliberately looking away from them. "They were so far away, probably just teasing each other." It wasn't entirely believable, even to myself. But Chloe tended to take me at face value.

Chloe nodded eagerly, desperate for reassurance. “Yeah, you’re right. Just boys winding us up, of course.” She let out a nervous giggle that didn't quite reach her eyes.

I forced a relaxed grin onto my face—a carefully crafted expression designed to convey nonchalance—while inside my mind thoughts raced. *They saw everything*, I thought. *They probably took pictures*. A rush of excitement, sharp and unexpected, shot through me. This was it – the forbidden thrill I craved.

The blonde boy called out, his voice carrying over the din of the fairground: "Hey ladies! Thanks for the show today!" His friends erupted in fresh laughter as they walked away, their taunts lingering in the air like static electricity.

We stared at each other, our faces illuminated by the garish lights. Chloe’s expression was a mixture of shock and mortification. She started to fidget with her jeans, avoiding my gaze.

I busied myself picking at a loose thread on my sundress, feigning disinterest. “They’re just being ridiculous,” I mumbled, trying to make it sound like an objective observation rather than the truth—which was that they had enjoyed their entertainment and found us endlessly amusing. A little voice in my head whispered: *Maybe we should give them something else to look at.*

A mischievous glint sparked in my eyes. This wasn’t about embarrassment or shame; this was a game now, a challenge. And I intended to win—by pushing the boundaries just a little bit further.
