What's next?
Disaster strikes.
Then, out of the blue, she disappears. You try to find out from Steven what happened to her, but he tells you that she simply decided she wanted to move out of the house. You know he knows where she's living, but it's difficult to ask for her exact address without drawing any suspicion. From your conversations, you glean she's moved to the city - the perfect place to hide, or to get lost. But apart from that, it would be impossible to find her without any more information.
You can't take your mind off her, but that's not the only thing that goes wrong in your life. One day, you're sitting at your desk, the hum of the office a distant drone as you stare at the email on your screen. The words blur for a moment, but there’s no mistaking the subject line: “Restructuring: Your Position.” Your fingers hover over the mouse, reluctant to scroll, as if delaying the inevitable will change the outcome. But you do, and the message is clear - your role has been eliminated. Effective immediately.
The walk to your car feels surreal, your shoes scuffing against the pavement like they’re trying to remind you this is real. The severance package is like a band-aid on a bullet wound - enough to cover the mortgage for two months, maybe three if you stretch it. By the end of the first month, the job applications have yielded nothing but silence. You watch as your savings dwindle with each withdrawal by the second. The third month arrives, and the balance in your account is almost nothing, supported only by your wife's meagre income.
As your worries gnaw away at you, there's only one thing that can make you feel better. You have to find Gemma.
