After the Bell

Chapter 17 by sexycooldude

The proctor’s voice broke the quiet. “Time’s up. Pencils down.”

Alex set his pencil on the desk. He had finished ten minutes ago but his mind had never been on the test. It kept going back to Mia’s apartment. To the way she had felt under him. To the words that had slipped out when she came.

He stood up slow. Students all around him shoved papers into bags and headed for the doors. He scanned the rows until he saw her. Mia was still at her desk. She closed her notebook and looked up like she had been waiting for him to notice.

She stood and walked over. The crowd moved around them but she came straight to his side. Her hand touched his arm. Light. Warm. She left it there longer than she needed to.

“Hey,” she said. She smiled at him. Small and real. “You okay?”

He nodded. His throat felt tight. “Yeah. Just done.”

She kept her hand on his arm another second. Then she let go but stayed close. Close enough that he could smell her shampoo. The same scent that had been on his pillow this morning.

“How did you do?” she asked. She tilted her head. “That question on Piaget. I remember you kept mixing up the stages when we studied.”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “I think I got it right. Thanks to you.”

She smiled wider. “Good. I was hoping.”

They started walking with the flow of people into the hallway. It was loud. Everyone talking about answers and how hard it was. Mia stayed right next to him. Her shoulder brushed his when someone bumped them from behind. She didn’t step away.

Alex’s stomach twisted. This morning felt far away now. Like something that happened in another life. Waking up with her leg over his. Her skin warm against his chest. The way she had looked at him when she said those three words. He had said them back. Now the sun was bright through the windows and he couldn’t stop wondering if she still meant it.

His body remembered too. The memory hit him hard. Her hips moving with his. The sound she made when she came the second time. He felt himself getting hard and shifted his bag lower in front of him. Heat crept up his neck. He felt guilty for it. Like he was cheapening something good just by thinking about it in the middle of campus.

Mia glanced at him. “You’re quiet.”

He forced his voice out. “Just tired. We woke up late.”

She laughed soft. Her cheeks went a little pink. “Yeah. But I liked how we woke up.”

She said it low. Then she looked ahead like she was shy about it. But she didn’t move away. Her arm stayed close enough to touch his again if they kept walking like this.

They reached the big doors and stepped outside. The air felt warm on his face. Students spread out across the paths. Mia slowed down a little.

“Want to walk for a bit?” she asked. She looked up at him. Her eyes were hopeful. “Before we figure out the bus or anything.”

He wanted to say yes to anything that kept her near him. He also wanted to ask if they could go back to her place. Just the two of them. No exam. No people. But the words stuck. What if she thought he only wanted one thing now? What if the “I love you” had been too much and she was just being nice?

“Sure,” he said. “Walking sounds good.”

She smiled again. That warm one that made his chest ache. “Okay.”

They turned onto a quieter path that curved around the library. Trees made shade over the sidewalk. It was less crowded here. Mia walked close. Her hand swung near his a few times. Once it almost touched. He wanted to grab it. To pull her against him like he had last night. But he kept his hands at his sides.

His mind wouldn’t stop. The long months of wanting her. The first kiss on her doorstep when she had pulled back. All the study nights where he had gone home hard and frustrated and sure she would never feel the same. Then last night had happened. And this morning. And now everything felt bigger. He was scared it would break if he pushed too hard.

Mia bumped his arm with her elbow. On purpose this time. She smiled when he looked down.

“I’m glad we studied together,” she said. “I think we both did better.”

He nodded. “Yeah. We did.”

She stayed close. Her side brushed his again as they walked under a tree. He could feel the heat of her through his shirt. It made him want to stop right there and kiss her. Slow. The way he had kissed her in her bed when the sun was barely up.

But he didn’t. He kept walking. His heart beat too fast. Hope and doubt sat heavy in his chest at the same time. He wanted more of her. More mornings. More nights. More of the way she looked at him like she wanted him too.

He just didn’t know how to ask without messing it up.

They kept going down the path. The tension sat between them like something you could touch. Alex felt it in every small look she gave him. In the way she didn’t let space grow between them.

He didn’t want the walk to end. But he also didn’t know what came after it.
