The spotlight locks onto me the instant I step into the center ring. Hundreds of faces turn toward the lone clown standing beneath the brilliant white light. I can feel their eyes moving over every humiliating detail: my bald scalp, my missing eyebrows, the painted smile stretched across my face, the blue tears beneath my eyes, the ridiculous patchwork skirt, the mismatched stockings, and the oversized yellow shoes that seem determined to make every movement look awkward.

For a heartbeat, the circus falls silent. The silence lasts only a moment. Then someone laughs. The sound spreads through the grandstands like wildfire. One laugh becomes ten. Ten become a hundred. Within seconds the entire tent is roaring.

Men and women point openly in my direction while others clap as though my mere appearance is part of the entertainment. Some whistle. Some double over with laughter. A few simply shake their heads, unable to believe what they are seeing. I instinctively lower my head.

"Look at them," Valeria says quietly.

The curse obeys before I can resist. My chin rises. I am forced to look directly into the faces of the people laughing at me. Valeria raises one elegant hand. Behind me comes the sound of heavy canvas unfurling. A pair of stagehands haul an enormous banner upward until it hangs from the rafters behind the ring. Gasps ripple through the audience before another wave of laughter crashes over me.

The banner is impossible to ignore. It towers over the ring like a carnival billboard, displaying an enormous painted portrait of me exactly as I stand before them. The artist has exaggerated every humiliating feature. My painted smile is wider. My expression is even more pathetic. Above the portrait, huge letters proclaim:

VOSS CIRCUS PRESENTS

THE WORLD'S UGLIEST GIRL!

Around the portrait, carnival slogans promise the audience they will witness the greatest curiosity in the circus. At the center of it all is my own name, not a stage name, not a nickname, my real name. I feel my stomach drop. Valeria steps confidently into the center of the ring and extends one arm toward the banner.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" she calls, her voice effortlessly filling the tent. "Today, Voss Circus is proud to present a performer unlike any other." The applause begins immediately. She lets it continue before sweeping her hand toward me. "Behold... Jezebel 'Bells' James!".The audience cheers. My heart sinks.

"There she stands before you, the World's Ugliest Girl! A woman so astonishing that artists struggle to capture her, yet somehow still fail to do her justice." The crowd erupts again. Several people begin chanting my name, not because they admire me, but because they are amused by me.

Valeria waits for the laughter to crest before continuing. "Remember that face. Remember that name. For nowhere else on Earth will you find a spectacle quite like Jezebel 'Bells' James!"

The applause grows even louder. I wish the ground would swallow me. Instead, I remain rooted to the spot beneath the spotlight while hundreds of strangers stare openly at me. Valeria walks slowly to my side, never taking her eyes off the audience.

"They know your name now," she says softly, speaking so only I can hear. I close my eyes. Her smile never wavers. "Now they've attached it to a face." She nods toward the towering banner hanging behind us. "They're laughing at you."

Another burst of laughter echoes through the tent. "They're chanting your name." More voices call out. "They're pointing at you." Dozens of hands are still aimed in my direction. "And they'll remember you." I swallow hard. Valeria finally looks directly at me. "That is the first lesson of Pride, Jezebel. Humiliation is fleeting... but reputation has a way of lingering."

I stare at the enormous banner hanging over the ring, my own painted face looking down at me while the audience continues to laugh. For the first time, I understand that the curse was never about making me look ridiculous. It was about making sure everyone else remembered that I had.
