Chapter 40

Do you pray to the Burning Rose? What do you say?
Chastise her
Feelings you'd buried since your **** in the abbey, raw human emotions that you thought you'd forgotten in your transformation, well up inside you now. "Blessed Rose, I..." you begin your prayer for supplication in the usual manner, but your voice quakes, and you realize how empty it all sounds now. You don't want anything from her. Yes, you failed her, but she failed you first, and for that, you've been cursed with this fiendish existence? Why shouldn't you enjoy what you've become, what you were previously denied? It's her fault that you're like this!
"I hate you. I devoted my life to you. I trained to honor you, to protect your faithful, to deny my worldly desires... and for what? It was all for nothing. I was faithful to you, and when I relied upon your protection, you failed me, and then abandoned me because of your failure." This isn't the first time you've felt this way, but it is the first time you've vocalized it. If a younger version of yourself were to listen to you right now, you'd call it blasphemy... but the you of the present sees it differently. This is perhaps the most honestly and earnestly you've ever prayed.
"I fell from you grace, yet still, STILL, I carry out the mission granted to me by the War Mother. I carry YOUR sword to YOUR abbey to do battle against YOUR enemy. Why? Why am I still serving you? I don't want this anymore! I want to live my own life, free from rules, free from you." You spit out the words, though still hushing your voice so as to not attract too much attention.
"To hell with this, and to hell with you. If you need your sword so badly, why don't you come and," The fire swells suddenly, and the heat is so intense that it actually flings you back. You look up at the plume of fire that just as suddenly dies down to its previous size.
Huh. Maybe she was listening after all.
"You hear me now, but did nothing to help me in the laundry?" You don't hide the frustration and confusion in your voice. If the goddess answered you, it might as well be a conversation.
The are no words to given in response, but as you gaze into the fire, you see the image of the imp that violated you, then a flash of one of the holy scriptures detailing wards and binding rituals. After that, a scene quickly unfolds, one of your former sisters, though you cannot tell who it is, summoning the daemon, and marking it with one of the wards.
The scene is over almost too quickly for you to comprehend the gravity of it all, and you stare in shock at the flames for several more seconds. How could you have forgotten the image of that ward, charged with your divine fury when you had attempted to smite the imp? In your rage, you must have been blocking it out, but it seems so obvious now... the goddess never failed you... you were equally betrayed by one of your own sisters.
The fire is softer now, not burning hot, but its warmth seems to spread throughout you nevertheless.
You have no more words, but nothing more needs to be said. Thoros may be the immediate threat, but someone else is responsible for all of this, and that person will pay dearly. You fall asleep soon afterward.
When you awaken, the fire is still burning just as brightly as when you closed your eyes.
Has everyone recovered yet?
