Accept the role of guide

“I’ll be ready at the trail head,” you say, looking directly back at Dana with a calm, steady confidence. “Just make sure everyone has a solid pair of hiking shoes on. The path gets steep once we clear the timber line, and that summit snow packs a real chill.”

Your deep, assured voice anchors the room, setting a definitive tone for the afternoon ahead. Dana’s smirk widens ever so slightly, a flash of pure, mature satisfaction gleaming in her eyes as she absorbs your ready compliance.

At your confirmation, the lobby immediately fractals back into motion. Lauren gives your arm a quick, affectionate squeeze. “I’ll run up to our cabin right now and grab that bikini for Maya,” she says brightly, her bubbly energy completely unaware of the underlying layers of tension in the room. She turns on her heel and heads toward the back exit, determined to help her young trainee.

Heather watches Lauren leave, then cautiously lifts her gaze back to you. Still wrapped tightly in her arms, the rich crimson flush on her cheeks hasn’t fully faded. Knowing that you are about to lead them isolated into the mountain woods, and that she will be under your direct guidance, brings a fresh, visible wave of nervous, thrilled vulnerability to her posture.

Meanwhile, Vicky finishes the last of her black coffee with a sharp, disciplined swallow. She sets the ceramic mug down with a deliberate click, her ice-blue eyes locking onto yours across the lobby. Her analytical mind is already shifting into a competitive, focused state; she treats the upcoming climb like an acquisition, a physical challenge she fully intends to master under your watchful eye.

Maya simply giggles, licking a trace of cinnamon sugar off her thumb as she bounces on her heels. She seems entirely thrilled by the prospect of hiking up to a snow patch in a borrowed bikini, her raw, exhibitionistic indifference completely unfazed by the sudden change in plans.

Dana steps back from the counter, her fluid, commanding presence drawing her students into alignment. “You heard your guide, ladies. Fifteen minutes to gear up and meet at the trail head. Let’s move.”

The Mountain Trail Head - 15 Minutes Later

The crisp afternoon air bites at your face as you stand at the base of the summit trail, a rugged leather pack slung over your broad shoulders. The towering pines sway gently above, whispering in the wind.

Soon enough, the heavy crunch of gravel signals their arrival.

The women march toward the trail head, entirely transformed for the trek. Vicky leads the pack, her tall frame clad in a sleek, wind-resistant black shell that perfectly matches her strict technical gear. Heather and Lauren walk side-by-side just behind her, both wearing sturdy boots and thick fleece jackets to ward off the high-altitude breeze.

Bringing up the rear is Maya, walking alongside a dry, commanding Dana. Maya has her unzipped track jacket pulled close and her thrift-store leggings on, completely covered up against the elements. She gives you a bright, energetic wave as they approach, her wild dark curls bouncing with every step.

As they halt in front of you, the vast, isolated wilderness stretches out above, waiting. What do you do?

Take the lead immediately and set a challenging pace. Turn on your heel and head up the steep incline, forcing the women to keep up, keeping your eyes on Vicky to see how her fierce, rigid discipline handles your physical lead.

Brief the group with an authoritative guide’s speech. Stand before them, point out the distant, snow-capped summit above the tree-line, and deliberately outline the safety rules, letting your rugged expertise establish total control over the excursion.

Position yourself at the rear of the line. Tell Vicky to lead the path while you walk at the very back to “keep an eye on everyone’s form,” giving yourself a perfect, unobstructed view of all four women, and Maya’s highly exposed attire, as they climb ahead of you.
