Chapter 12 by Creature0909

Love in Twilight?

Shadow sat up slowly, the sheets cool against his fur. Rouge had already risen. He stretched, feeling the deepest sleep he had known in years. He knew why. The comfort. The safety. The way he had let his guard slip completely in her presence. He rose, padded across the room, and stepped into the shower. The door swung open without warning.

Rouge stood there wrapped in nothing but a towel, her impressive bust rising and falling with each breath. Water droplets traced paths down her collarbone. Shadow’s eyes widened. Heat flooded his face. He stumbled back. “S-sorry! I should have knocked!”

Rouge’s gaze dropped for a heartbeat. Shadow’s blush deepened until his muzzle burned. She took a slow breath, then spoke his name softly. “Shadow?”

Rouge slipped past him, cheeks flushed crimson. “It’s okay! Really!” She hurried back into their room. Shadow stepped into the shower and let the cold water crash over him. He scrubbed his quills, trying to steady his racing pulse.

“What’s wrong with me? I’m usually more careful than that.” The words left him in a low mutter. “This place is getting to me. It won’t be long before we give in to our base cravings.” His mind drifted to Rouge, the curve of her body still vivid behind his eyes. “With how beautiful she is, that might not be the worst thing.” He clapped a hand over his mouth, water streaming down his face. “This place is changing me. And probably her too.” He closed his eyes. “Last night’s dream with her mother… those feelings were real. How do I accept them?”

While drying off, he caught the sound of a breath hitching on the other side of the door. Shadow paused, listening.

“You had him,” Rouge whispered to herself. “He couldn’t take his eyes off you. You felt the sparks too. All you had to do was whip off that towel and let your body do the rest. Shadow would…” She stopped. Shadow’s mind supplied the image she had nearly described. “Shadow would do nothing. He’s not like that.”

He eased the door open a crack. Rouge stood fully dressed in her signature white latex bodysuit, rubbing her temple. “Just talk to him about it. Come on, Rouge. Like Maria said in your dream… Shadow may surprise you.”

Shadow closed the door quietly. He knocked this time, giving her fair warning. Rouge let him in. He began redressing while she watched him, quiet and tense.

“Hey, Shadow.” She swallowed. “Can we talk?”

Shadow paused. “We kind of need to. Not here, though.”

Before she could finish, he swept her into his arms bridal-style and blurred out the door in a streak of orange. They reappeared on the hill where they had stood the day before. He set her down gently. “I didn’t mess anything up, did I?”

Rouge chuckled, smoothing her gloves. “Nope. I’m all attached and still decent.” She sat, gazing out over the landscape. “This spot is… really nice.”

Shadow felt the tension radiating from her. She glanced at him, then forward again. “You want to know what Maria said to me, don’t you?”

“N-no… I want to hear…” The truth slipped out before he could stop it.

“She’s proud of you, Shadow. Proud of the hedgehog you became.” Rouge’s hands trembled. “I know my mother probably told you to think about us, but… there is no…” Her voice locked. She looked down.

Shadow’s hand found hers, strong and certain. He pulled her into a surprise embrace. Rouge’s confusion melted against his chest.

The black hedgehog looked at the white bat with a soft, genuine smile instead of his usual smirk. Rouge nuzzled closer. Shadow sighed, relaxed and content. “Rouge, what do you have to say?”

She looked up. He nodded, completely serious.

“Shadow.” Her fingers curled into the fur on his chest. His heart hammered so hard he was sure she could feel it. He had never let anyone this close. With her, it felt right. “I finally sorted it out. Even if it took Maria’s help.” She drew a deep, shaking breath. Shadow’s arms tightened protectively around her. “I love you, Shadow the Hedgehog. Now more than ever…”

She leaned in, then pulled back, eyes clouded with doubt. “But I know. I’m not Maria. I never can be. I won’t be able to—”

Shadow cut her off with a kiss. Rouge’s arms wrapped tighter around him. His eyes burned with desire and something deeper. He whispered against her lips, “I prefer my actions do the talking. Let me make this clear.”

They kissed again, longer, slower. Rouge’s tears slipped free. Shadow answered every confession with the press of his mouth, the strength of his arms, the rising heat between them. When she pulled back, her eyes had narrowed into sultry desire.

A low rumble shook the ground beneath them. Both stood at once, alert. “Rouge, get ready. I think this is it.”

She nodded. Their hands found each other. A bright light engulfed them.

In the waking world, the Love Ruby trembled in Infinite’s gloating grip. It flashed brilliantly. The jackal’s eyes widened as Shadow and Rouge appeared hand-in-hand, glaring at him.

“This is impossible! You… you can’t be… you’re too damaged to have real love!” Infinite barked, raising his hand. “You two couldn’t have found love! You’re both damaged goods. You don’t know what love truly is!”

Rouge launched forward with a powerful kick that sent Infinite flying. Shadow followed with a crushing blow to the stomach. “I am Shadow the Hedgehog. My past will never die, but I’m looking to the future and to the one I love so I can finally live.”

Rouge met the jackal on the other side and drove her heel into his back, launching him back toward Shadow. “And I am Rouge the Bat. I’m ready to prove I’m worthy of someone’s love, because I finally found what love is!”

Shadow revved into a spin dash, slammed into Infinite, then leaped high and kicked downward. “This is who we are!” they shouted together. Two final blows sent Infinite crashing to the ground in a heap.

Silence fell. Shadow felt a gentle pull. Rouge kissed his cheek. He smirked, teasing, “You can do better than that.”

He cupped her face with both hands and drew her into a deep, beautiful kiss as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in gold and rose. A new night welcomed a new love.
