Chapter 12 by Cantalope Cantalope

Lara sat dispirited at her desk, back in her college apartment. She just started her sophomore year as an undergraduate and her classes were piling on the work. Her desk looked like a very selective tornado had scattered books, papers, and pencils at random without touching the rest of the room. The sun had just set and she had been studying non-stop since this morning. She wasn't even close to being caught up yet.

With a click her door opened and in walked her roommate, Sam, who stopped dead at the sight of Lara.

"You haven't stopped all day have you?"

"Nope." Lara reached for her headphones to block out the new distraction but Sam grabbed her arm.

"Lara, you've been studying for the past 12 hours."

"Because I need to. What have you been doing?", she responded irritatedly.

"I've been enjoying my Saturday like a normal student." She picked up a book on hieroglyphics. "Y'know you really don't have to do all the assigned reading to get an A." Lara rolled her eyes at that, it was such a Sam thing to say.

"In Ancient Cultures 102 you do." snatching the book back and setting it down on the desk a little harder than necessary.

"Lara, you need a break" Lara could hear rustling behind her as Sam lifted up her mattress.

"Maybe, but what I don't need-" Lara turned, trying to head off where she knew this was going.

"-and a drink." Sam beamed as she offered the frazzled Lara a shot. How did she pour it so fast?

Glaring up at Sam, Lara grumpily took the shot glass. Grabbing chaser from the mini-fridge Sam grinned sunnily, "Down the hatch Lara!" Sam could sometimes be the most annoying presence in Lara's life.

...But after the fifth shot Lara had to admit Sam was a pretty good friend. Sam was cackling on the bed as Lara rolled around on the floor, guffawing. Thinking back she had no idea what got them started but now that they were laughing together neither of them could stop. This was pretty much how freshman year had gone, Lara diligently working away until Sam walked into the room. Really, it was amazing they got along so well considering how different they were. With some difficulty the hyperventilating couple managed to raise Lara onto Sam's bed, where they lay gasping and red faced.
