Chapter 18 by bigdamnvillain bigdamnvillain

What's your move?

Infiltration

You watch on the imager as Wonder Woman moves around the living room, the kitchen. She disappears into the bedroom, emerging a few minutes later in a robe. She pours herself a drink, eats something from the fridge, reads on the couch for a while, and roughly an hour after entering the apartment she goes into the bedroom and turns off the lights. You give her another hour to make sure she's asleep.

Then you open the valve releasing the sedative gas into her ventilation system.

You couldn’t get your hands on anything strong enough to actually put her to sleep, but it should keep her from waking up. Or at least it should have if she hadn’t left the balcony door open; no telling if it’ll reach enough concentration to do even that much. But maybe it’ll dull her alertness enough, as long as you don't make too much noise?

You trigger the manual unlock on her door and leave the maintenance room - at the last minute remembering to grab the door to keep it from slamming closed - then it’s four quick steps to the door of Diana’s apartment. You pop in your nose filters to protect against the gas, then gently turn the door handle and slowly push the door open. You listen for a few seconds but hear nothing, so you step over the threshold and silently close the door behind you, saying a silent prayer of thanks to whoever invented the WD40 you put on her door hinges.

Inside you stand still and let your eyes adjust to the dim lighting. The bright side (ha ha) of her leaving the sliding door open is that it lets in enough light to keep from tripping over the furniture. After a few minutes, you start to creep your way towards the bedroom – and your phone buzzes to alert you that someone is moving in the apartment, nearly giving you a heart attack until you realize it’s reacting to your movement.

I bet shit like that never happens to Batman.

You freeze for several minutes, but you don’t hear any reaction from the bedroom. Reaching into your pocket you switch off notifications, then resume slow-walking towards the bedroom.

(You spent a ridiculous number of hours the last few weeks practicing walking silently. Getting the right shoes was half the battle, but mostly it’s about patience. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, yadda yadda.)

You reach the doorway to the bedroom, listen for another few minutes and then glide through, spending as little time as possible silhouetted in the doorway.

The bedroom is darker than the living room, but you can make out the bed and a roughly Amazon-sized lump under the covers. You can just hear her soft breathing.

Looking around the room you spot it – the golden lasso, lying on a chair outside the bathroom. It doesn’t glow exactly, but it somehow seems to catch more of the light than the things surrounding it. Once you’re pretty sure there’s nothing on the floor for you to trip over, you move across to it. There’s just enough light for you to make out the red costume it’s lying on, as you reach for the lasso...

The second your fingers close around the rope, she sits up in bed as if she heard a noise.

Fight? Flight? Or Freeze?
