Chapter 30

But what are you up against?
Monstrous spiders, and...
With your sword held en garde and your back to your warhorse, you're as well prepared for whatever is challenging you as you can possibly be. Indra's light spell dissipated when she was yanked out of sight, so your eyes switch over to their daemonic night-vision. The world around you is brighter again, but devoid of color.
That's irrelevant, as the creature that crawls toward you is probably flat-black anyway. Creatures, you correct yourself. Knee-high arachnids, to be specific, with bulbous abdomens larger than your head and legs the length of your arms. You count one directly ahead of you, only a few yards away, two more to its left, three to its right, more sounds behind you, movement above you...
You tighten your grip on the holy blade. This is it. You're about to become a meal for a nest of giant spiders, but you'll take as many with you as you can...
But the attack never comes. The spiders seem poised to attack, and with the adrenaline flowing through you, you switch your stance, confronting the group to your left, and then your right, your eyes darting back and forth. Several of the massive creatures scuttle a few inches one way or the other when you turn to face them, and you're fully expecting a sneak attack from above any moment. Instead, a voice rings out from above you.
"What an odd daemonesss. Travelss with human. Fightss like human. Even smellss like human." You follow the sound of the voice to see a vaguely humanoid creature with distinct arachnid characteristics. It has the legs and torso of a man, but with chitinous plating covering its vital organs. The creature has two extra pairs of arms, all of which end in wicked looking claws. Its face is a horrid amalgamation of spider and human, with eight eyes and mandables, and an extra large jaw, you assume to accommodate poison glands. He has no human hair, but thick stalks of bristles grow all over his body.
They're not common, but you're familiar with this creature from your training in the monastery: an Ettercap. They're usually satisfied hunting large game like deer, but once every few seasons, they seek out an adequate human womb to bear their brood. If that's the case, it would explain why he took Indra and not yourself - her body is nubile, ready to carry the monster's young. Yours is already filled with child.
"Odd, yes, I suppose I am. I've taken a liking to that human, and I'd like her back. I do not mean you any harm. Return her to me, and we'll pass by your nest another way." You don't think he'll agree, but talking here is preferable to fighting.
He chitters for a few seconds. You think that's his version of laughter. "Find a new sslave, ssuccubuss. Leave now, and be glad your sslut ssnatch is no usse to me." That all but confirms his intentions. As he begins to crawl back up the tree he is perched on, you want to call back to him to negotiate some sort of compromise, but what could you possibly offer? Newborn Ettercap spawn eat their mother alive, so you can't allow him to use Indra's body, and he isn't interested in yours. If you can't think of anything, you'll have to fight your way through a small horde of giant spiders, or else abandon your companion to her fate.
What do you do?
