Hold the Breath

The lake closed over her head like a shock. She surfaced, gasping, and found Jashaun already in beside her, his dark shoulders cutting through the water. They treaded in silence for a long minute, the only sounds their breathing and the soft slap of waves. Kelsey’s whole body hummed. She was naked in a lake with the boy she’d wanted for months, and she couldn’t stop staring at the thick shape of him beneath the murky water.

They filled their lungs and ducked under. The underwater world was silent and dark. Kelsey opened her eyes—saw his shadowy form a few feet away. She counted. Ten seconds. Twenty.
