The captain shoved up his hat with his thumb. “To make your people weak. If we were to kill you, you’d be some sort of martyr to them. Still a hero after death. A rallying cry. An inspiration for them.”

The two soldiers laughed.

The captain continued, “When they see you return as a woman, they’ll give in. That drink did a little more damage. You’ll find that you’re weak. And timid like a baby deer now. From Mountain Buffalo to Baby Deer.”

They all guffawed as Kai squirmed.

“Now you’re nothing but a weak squaw. Untie him. I mean untie her.”

One of the soldiers grunted. “Can’t we have a little fun first before we let her go?”

The other soldier licked his lips. “Yeah, she’s awful pretty now. Look at them titties.”

“She is rather fetching at that,” said the captain.
