Chapter 75 by bla12

How was the encounter with Matteo?

With a double bait

The restaurant was one of those modern sanctuaries where minimalism was valued in gold. Pure lines, dim lighting, and a level of privacy that came at a steep price. Magi, following Valeria’s millimeter-perfect instructions, wore a black silk dress with an open back—an elegant garment that suggested far more than it showed, transforming her into a luxury product ready for exhibition.

Valeria, at her side, projected a radically different yet complementary image. Dressed in a wine-colored silk pantsuit, she emanated a sophistication that rivaled any top executive. She didn't look like the "assistant"; she was an equal partner, the woman holding the key to the real deal.

Matteo Ricci arrived with the relaxed punctuality of a man who knows the world is willing to wait for him. His greeting was warm, and his large, expressive hands gestured as he spoke about the purity of olive oil. But his eyes, lively and intelligent, missed nothing: they roamed over Magi with evident masculine admiration, but lingered on Valeria with intrigued respect.

"Adrián has always had an exquisite eye," Matteo remarked during dinner, his gaze jumping between the two. "Not just for business, but for surrounding himself with beauty and intelligence. A combination that is often rare to find."

"Adrián values efficiency above all things," Valeria replied, with a smile that was a direct challenge. "And efficiency often comes in unexpected packages." She took a sip of red wine, letting the insinuation hang in the air like expensive perfume.

Magi **** a smile, executing her script with precision. She spoke of art, travel, and the interests she had memorized from the file. But it was Valeria who steered the conversation into deeper, more dangerous waters.

"Of course, the true value isn't in what is seen, but in what moves behind the scenes," Valeria said, locking her gaze on Matteo. "A good oil can open doors, but a good channel... can open continents. You know this well, Matteo. Your network in Naples is enviable, and Adrián believes it would be mutually beneficial to make it even more... exclusive."

Matteo didn't flinch. He offered a complicit smile, the smile of one predator recognizing another.

"Exclusivity carries a very high price, dear Valeria. Not just a monetary one. It implies trust and, above all, silence."

"Silence is our specialty," Valeria countered without blinking. "And trust is earned. Sometimes, with a good deal. Other times..." she let her gaze sweep over Magi in a slow, deliberate manner, "with a demonstration of just how far one is willing to go to protect common interests."

Magi felt a chill run down her bare back. The conversation was no longer about imports; it was about shipments bypassing customs and bribes greasing criminal gears. She realized that Valeria was not only aware of the business but was one of its primary architects. Matteo wasn't being seduced just by a beautiful woman; he was being courted by the promise of power that the Soler name represented.

"Your brother is a man of vision," Matteo conceded, addressing Valeria almost exclusively, as if Magi were, for a moment, a silent ornament. "And you, my dear, seem to perfectly understand the nuances of that vision."

"We grew up in this business," Valeria said with frigid simplicity. "We know that trees sometimes need pruning so they can bear better fruit. And we know how to recognize the gardeners who are worth the effort."

The dinner ended with a promise of future meetings. Matteo kissed Magi’s hand gallantly, but it was to Valeria that he dedicated a final, significant look of recognition.

In the car on the way back, the silence was thick and sharp. Valeria, with the tablet on her lap, typed a quick report for her brother.

"Good," she finally said, without looking at Magi. "He took the bait. But he’s not just interested in the lure; now he’s curious about the fisher." She looked up, her eyes pinning Magi’s. "Your next move must be bolder. You have to make it clear that you aren't just a pretty face. You have to prove that you are as deep in this mud as I am."

Magi nodded, watching the city lights blur through the window. She had prepared for a physical seduction, but she found herself in the middle of a duel of alliances where she was the highest-value pawn. To survive, she had to prove she deserved a place at that dirty table—not as a guest, but as part of a family willing to do anything for control.

What's next for the mission?
