Chapter 17: Talk is Cheap
Continued from chapter 16:
“You hurt me, sexually. You created an imbalance there that I can never make right; otherwise, I would also be cheating. You hit me right in the manhood with this.”
Amy flinches at my blunt assessment, and the raw pain in my words cuts deep. She nods slowly, realizing the magnitude of the wound she’s inflicted and the impossibility of mending it with half-measures.
“You’re right, Ero. I see that now. Trying to patch this with quick fixes is insulting to the severity of the injury.”
Taking a shaky breath, she steels herself for what she’s about to propose.
“Perhaps... perhaps the only way to begin to balance the scales is for me to submit myself fully to your authority, to accept whatever discipline or penance you deem necessary. Not as a power play, but as an act of contrition and trust.”
“You're getting warmer,” I say, a hint of **** approval creeping into my voice.
“But you don’t want me to be on the other end of that, Amy. I really don’t trust myself to punish you out of love, as angry as I still am.”
“This is exhausting and going nowhere tonight. Let’s try again tomorrow night.”
I go about my day, and keep my distance from Amy, the weight of unresolved issues pressing down on both of us. That night, as Amy and I drift into a restless sleep, we are left grappling with the enormity of the task ahead—not just the task of Amy winning back my trust, but earning it through consistent, meaningful action.
Chapter 17:
When morning comes, I cook breakfast again, so that Amy can wake up to the familiar scents of coffee brewing and bacon sizzling. As mad as I am at her, I still love her still care for her, and this small gesture reflects my capacity for forgiveness, even amid such profound betrayal.
After I leave for work, Amy takes stock of the day ahead. True repentance requires more than grand declarations; it demands a steadfast commitment to growth and the desire to become the partner she feels I deserve.
The next evening, as I return home, Amy greets me with a tentative smile, a single sheet of paper trembling in her hands.
“I spent today thinking about what you said, about needing to feel understood and having my actions acknowledged,” she says, her voice soft yet steady.
She holds out the paper.
“This is a detailed account of my infidelity: the circumstances, my motivations, and most importantly, my deep regret. I want you to read it, to know exactly what happened and why.”
I hand it back to her.
“No. I’m not reading this. Read it to me. I want to watch your face, to see all your little emotions as you read.”
Her heart races as she takes the paper back, hands trembling slightly as she unfolds it. She takes a deep, steadying breath before beginning, her voice low and filled with emotion.
“My dearest Ero,
I cannot begin to express the depths of my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused you. What I did was a terrible mistake, born of weakness and poor judgment. I want you to know the full truth so that we may begin the process of healing and rebuilding trust.
It began with a series of seemingly innocent outings with the girls—late nights, too much ****, and a growing sense of recklessness. I convinced myself that my actions weren’t truly hurting anyone, that I could keep these two parts of my life separate.”
As she reads, Amy keeps her gaze lowered, focusing on the words. Tears begin to fall, leaving damp spots on the page as she recounts the details of her betrayal—the flirtation, the drinks with coworkers that turn inappropriate, the moment she gives in to temptation. Her voice cracks with emotion, each word a painful admission.
When she finishes, she is a sobbing mess, the weight of her confession crashing down on her.
“Did that help? Did that make you feel better, Amy?” I ask, my tone flat, masking the turmoil within me.
She looks up at me, her tear-filled eyes reflecting anguish and desperation.
“N-no, Ero. Telling you the truth doesn’t make me feel better. It highlights the depths of my shame and regret.”
She takes a shuddering breath, struggling to compose herself to continue.
“I did this to myself. To us. There’s no amount of confession or apology that can undo the damage I’ve caused. All I can offer is my sincere remorse and a solemn vow to dedicate myself to earning your trust again, no matter how long it takes or what it requires of me.”
“Good, because it didn’t do anything for me either,” I say, frustration spilling over.
“I told you, talk is cheap. It doesn’t accomplish anything. I need more from you, Amy. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I need something drastic. Amy, I asked you the first night how low you would go. What is the answer to that question?”
Her breath catches in her throat. I know her response will define our future, potentially salvaging what remains of our marriage or sealing its fate.
With trembling hands, she sets the letter aside and rises to stand before me, chin lifted in grim determination despite the tears streaming down her face.
“I... I understand that words alone are insufficient, Ero. You’re right; I need to demonstrate my commitment through actions, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable they may be.”
She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what she’s about to say.
“The truth is, Ero... I don’t know how low I would go. In my desperation to win back your trust and love, I’m afraid I might be willing to do almost anything.”
Amy moves closer to me, hesitant steps revealing her anxiety.
“If you’re asking me to submit completely, to surrender control and dignity to atone for my sins... I think I would do it. To prove my devotion, my remorse, my willingness to bear any burden to make things right between us.”
Her voice drops to a whisper, eyes locking onto mine.
“Tell me what you need, Ero. If that’s what it takes to begin making things right, then I will go as low as necessary.”
“I need to see you punished, Amy. Your friends too—at least Jenna and Rose, if they are going to continue calling you their friends. They need to be punished with you.”
Shock washes over her, a chill running down her spine at the implications of my suggestion. I can see her mind racing as she considers the gravity of my words.
After a long moment, she speaks, voice trembling but resolute.
“I... I think I might know someone. An old college professor of mine, Dr. Eliza Thorne. She’s known for her unconventional methods in couples therapy, especially with cases involving infidelity. While she has a reputation for being stern, even harsh, her goal is always to facilitate real change and reconciliation.”
Amy takes another deep breath, steeling herself for the next part of her suggestion.
“I could reach out to her, explain the situation, see if she would be willing to take on our case, to design a program of punishment and redemption for me and…”
I smile sadly.
“You're on the right track, Amy, but I prefer to keep it a little closer.”
I continue trying to navigate my feelings, hoping Amy understands where I’m coming from.
“I just don’t know, Amy, about any of this. I hope we’re doing the right thing by going down this road. I feel so disconnected from you. I’m too angry to punish you, but I think you really need to be punished for what you did.”
