Chapter 32 by JohnnyTestes666
Deal?
Yes
Renee weighed her options for a moment. Everything was still very new; she could barely convince herself that she wasn't dreaming, or in some kind of strange dream, but somehow the situation seemed real, infinitely real, right, unknowingly right.
She looked deep into Moradin's eyes. They seemed sincere, pure despite his robust appearance; his hand, covered by a work glove that had seen better days, remained outstretched.
She said nothing, only breathed deeply, closed her eyes as if trying to convince herself that she wasn't making a terrible decision, and squeezed the hand of the man in front of her. She felt the firm, warm grip on her hand, heard a "Thank you" before the sensation dissipated.
When she opened her eyes, Renee didn't see Moradin, only his empty and already somewhat dark room. She felt an intense sleepiness that mixed with the strangeness of her new benefactor's disappearance.
The redhead sat up in her bed. Suddenly she felt exhausted, as if she could sleep for many hours. She tried to think about everything that had happened, but suddenly she fell asleep.
Renee had the most vivid dream of her life. She saw herself in an immense battle against humanoid figures that grew from 6 feet tall to ridiculously colossal sizes. In her hands, no longer delicate and feminine, but calloused and robust, was an apparently ordinary pickaxe. Renee saw herself raising the pickaxe and throwing it meters until it hit the head of a giant that seemed to be made of ice. She saw the monster's head crack into many pieces before the pickaxe returned to her palm.
At another moment she saw herself on a large mountain. Her hands gripped a large rock and, lifting it above her head with enormous ease, she struck a large bird that was flying towards her. Finally, a serpent, larger than any other, bearing ten horns on its head, rose from the middle of the water. Renee somehow knew the creature's name: Poketnaru.
Suddenly her eyes opened, her mother beside her was shaking her.
"Renee, darling? Are you alright? You've been sleeping for hours. You need to eat something," she said. Hearing her mother's voice, Renee slowly got up, feeling hungry.
"Yes... of course, food... food is good... I really need food." Renee went downstairs, feeling both hungry and very willing, ignored the small breads and juice that were on the table and reached for the refrigerator, inside was a bucket of spicy fried chicken that her father had left. She always thought the idea of saving this kind of thing to eat later was a strange and unconventional habit of her father's, but strangely the idea seemed brilliant to her now. She grabbed the bucket and devoured the chicken without even heating it. She found it delicious. Her surprised mother thought it best not to comment on it.
"Young people at this age are always strange," she thought.
Renee didn't notice her mother's bewilderment. After quickly getting rid of the chicken, she turned to the small loaves of bread, grabbed a few, and ate them, already scanning the rest of the refrigerator with her eyes. She chose four eggs, made a very large omelet, and ate it as if it were nothing.
"I really needed this," she said to herself.
Renee didn't go to church with her family; in fact, she had avoided anyone there for the past few weeks. Instead, she felt a sudden urge to rummage through her father's belongings. She assessed the things in the garage and, before she knew it, had assembled a small gas forge using scrap metal. It was only then that the bewilderment hit her.
"Wait a minute, since when do I know how to use a gas forge?" the redhead wondered.
And that's when she felt Moradin's presence, as if she heard his voice, but inside herself.
"It's a clash of personalities. You're absorbing a little of me, but that will do you good. Think of it as a chance to develop new hobbies." Moradin's voice said
Renee couldn't explain it, but she really liked it. The idea of maybe starting a knife-making hobby seemed... fitting. Enormously fitting.
To her family's utter astonishment, Renee spent the afternoon shaping a small blacksmith's knife from old steel, the end result. It was a job that looked quite professional despite the girl's inexperience. By the end of the day, Renee had eaten more chicken and eggs, taken a shower, and was getting ready for bed. She lay down on her bed and looked up. She felt a strange certainty about her personal life. A strange conviction that, somehow, good things would come into her life.
School day?
