Your wife Mary looks uncomfortable, and Deenie glares at you and Alice. You squeeze Alice's hand, let go of her, and shift to supporting yourself on the hand rail of the ramp. You pretend not to notice Deenie's sour look.

Whatever Deenie was feeling about you and Alice coming back hand in hand, she falls back into the old rhythm of joking back and forth.

Deenie laughs. "Oh I bet," she says.

Mary excuses herself to go through the craft exhibits in the barn while you clomp along on your walking cast behind Deenie, with Alice following along.

As Deenie gives you the run-down on her new-to-her bike, a solid old road model that just needs a little TLC and fix-ups, you encourage Alice to ask questions and get Deenie talking.

"Alice, hon, would you help me over to that bench? I have to sit down and stretch out. Deenie, see you soon, if you want the TMI version. Or ask Alice, she knows."

You slip Alice a couple of bills. "Buy her a lemonade. Ask her about the army. Remember you're driving, so don't run off on the back of her bike and leave me and Mary stranded."

Alice blushes. "If I don't see you I'll text you. The signal's good here."

Besides, you figure you want to hear in words from Alice how she feels about her first real-life dick ride on Old Number One.
