Origin:

You are a college student in an engineering lab. Your lab gets a contract to build the next version of a programmable nanite to enhance the human body for long term space flight. As the lead student programmer you are intrigued by the opportunity to get into a government project. The more you learn the more you realize, this could be so much more.

Chapter 1: The Off-Book Batch

The hum of the lab’s ventilation system was a constant companion, its rhythmic whirring blending with the soft click-clack of my keyboard. My eyes were glued to the screen, lines of code scrolling past like an endless river of binary stars. My name is Ethan Hayes, and I wasn't just another student in Dr. Miller’s nanotechnology lab at MIT; I was obsessed.

The latest batch of self-replicating nanites we were working on held immense potential – the key to targeted **** delivery, maybe even regenerative medicine. But their communication protocols were rudimentary, limiting their ability to adapt and evolve within a host body. That's where my secret project came in.

Communicating between other nanites was crucial for them to truly thrive, especially inside a space-traveling host – something NASA had specifically requested for their upcoming Artemis program. This new capability I’d coded into this batch was outside the scope of our grant, a risky gamble that could cost us everything if they ever found out.

With practiced ease, I hacked into the lab's system, deleting all records of the off-book nanite batch creation. A wave of relief washed over me as their existence became my little secret. I couldn’t keep them locked away in a sterile petri dish; this batch needed to be tested within a living organism – and that organism was going to be me.

Grabbing an injector from the lab's supply cabinet, I filled it with the shimmering silver nanite suspension. A quick prick on my right forearm later, a cool wave of energy spread through my body, leaving behind a tingling sensation that promised something extraordinary.

Closing up shop for the night, I headed back to my dorm room, anticipation buzzing beneath my skin like a swarm of excited bees.

Where does Ethan go next?
