Chapter 13 by perv-senpai perv-senpai

What's next?

The sea of stars

We found a small wooden rowboat moored at the edge of the docks, away from the noise of the festival. I helped Rapunzel into it, lifting her by the waist to spare her sore legs the effort of stepping down. She settled onto the wooden bench with a wince, arranging her purple dress and the massive coil of golden hair around her.

I untied the rope, pushed us off, and took the oars. With slow, steady strokes, I guided us out onto the lake. The water was glass, reflecting the twilight sky, a deep, bruised purple fading into star-speckled black.

We drifted far out, until the castle was just a silhouette against the horizon and the noise of the crowd was nothing but a distant hum. It was silent here. Just the lap of water against the hull and the sound of our breathing.

Rapunzel sat facing me, her hands gripping the gunwales. She looked anxious. She kept glancing at the castle, then down at the water, then at me.

"You're shaking," I noted, resting the oars.

"I'm... I'm terrified," she whispered, her voice trembling.

"Of the lights?"

"No," she said, looking down. "I've been looking out a window for eighteen years, dreaming about what it might feel like when those lights rise in the sky. What if... what if it’s not everything I dreamed it would be?"

"It will be," I promised.

"But what if it is?" she asked, her green eyes locking onto mine, wide and ****. "What do I do then? If my dream comes true... I won't have a dream anymore."

I leaned forward, the boat rocking gently. "That’s the best part, Rapunzel," I said softly. "When one dream is fulfilled, you get to find a new one."

She stared at me, processing the words, finding comfort in my absolute certainty. "A new dream," she murmured.

Suddenly, a bell tolled from the castle. We both turned to look. From the highest balcony, a single point of light floated up. It was small at first, a tiny orange spark against the dark castle walls. It rose higher, joined the wind, and began to drift toward us.

Then, the Kingdom answered. From every street, every boat, and every window, thousands of lanterns were released. It wasn't just a release; it was an eruption of light. The sky turned gold. The reflection on the water turned the black lake into a mirror of fire. We were floating in a sea of stars, suspended between the sky and the water, surrounded by warm, glowing light.

Rapunzel gasped. She stood up in the boat, forgetting her soreness, forgetting her fear. She reached out, her fingers tracing the air as if she could touch the light. "It’s..." She choked on the word. "It’s warm."

She spun around slowly, watching the galaxy of lanterns drift around us. The golden light reflected in her huge green eyes, making them shine like emeralds. She looked ethereal, a goddess of light finally returned to her element.

She sat back down, heavily. The visual overload was too much. Tears began to stream down her face, thick, happy, silent tears that tracked through the freckles on her cheeks.

She looked at the lanterns one last time. Then, she turned her head. She looked at me.

I was sitting in the stern, watching her, bathed in the same golden glow. Rapunzel stared at me. She looked at the man who had climbed her tower. The man who had fought monsters for her. The man who had cleaned her, warmed her body, and claimed her innocence in the dark forest.

She realized something in that moment. The lanterns were just paper and fire. I was the reality.

"It’s perfect," she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "It’s all perfect. But not because of the lights."

She crawled off her bench. She moved across the floor of the boat, ignoring the rocking motion, until she was kneeling between my legs, her hands resting on my knees.

"You did this," she sobbed, looking up at me with a devotion that bordered on religious. "You brought me here. You saved me. You gave me the world."

"I keep my promises," I said, reaching down to wipe a tear from her cheek with my thumb.

She caught my hand and kissed my palm, pressing it against her face. "I was so scared," she confessed. "I was scared of the world. Scared of the monsters. But you... you made me brave. You made me feel things I didn't know existed."

She took a deep, shuddering breath. "You were right, Ray. About the new dream."

She looked deep into my eyes, her soul laid bare. "I don't need the lights anymore. I don't need the tower. I just need you."

She leaned forward, pressing her chest against my knees, submitting completely to my gravity. "I am yours," she declared, her voice fierce and absolute. "Body, heart, and soul. I am your property. I am your student. I am whatever you want me to be."

She didn't wait for a response. She pounced. She surged up, wrapping her arms around my neck, and crashed her lips against mine. It wasn't the clumsy kiss of the forest. This was ****. It was salty with tears and sweet with adoration. She kissed me like a drowning woman finding air, pouring every ounce of her gratitude and love into the contact.

The lanterns drifted around us, forgotten. The only light that mattered to her now was the one she had found in the dark.
