Chapter 24 by BlackMonosh

Later in the evening, you revisit her
The sun has dipped below the horizon, casting the village into a soft, amber twilight by the time you return to the Sarutobi estate. The air inside is different now—the heavy, suffocating scent of incense and stale grief has been replaced by the faint, savory aroma of a freshly prepared dinner.
Kurenai is waiting for you. She has already eaten, and she sits at the low table with a poise that feels less like a defensive shield and more like a quiet, newfound comfort. She looks up as you enter, her eyes tracking your movements with an intensity that hasn't been there before.
"You're back," she says softly. Before you can even reach for a chair, she gestures toward the back of the house. "Go. Bathe before you eat. You've had a long day."
After the bath, you sit down to a spread that is far more elaborate than breakfast. Kurenai sits across from you, cradling a cup of tea, a small, enigmatic smile playing on her lips as she watches you eat. There is no shame left in her gaze, only a deep, simmering awareness.
"So," you say between bites, "how was your day? Did you take that walk?"
"I did," she says, her voice dropping into a melodic, almost conspiratorial tone. "That’s the interesting part. I walked through the village, and so many people stopped me. They took my hands, looked into my eyes with such pity, and offered their condolences. They all thought I was grieving. They thought the look in my eyes was a profound, stoic numbness."
Kurenai lets out a sudden, genuine laugh—a sound that is light but holds a dark edge of irony. She leans forward, the steam from her tea swirling between you.
"I let them believe it. I even told some of them that I felt numb. But the truth..." She pauses, her crimson eyes locking onto yours, glowing with a heat that has nothing to do with the morning's embarrassment. "I didn't feel numb at all. Every time someone touched my hand to comfort me, my skin crawled with the memory of your touch. My body wasn't mourning. It was anticipating. I spent the entire afternoon counting the minutes until the sun went down and you came back through that door."
She sets her tea down and leans back, her smile widening into something both beautiful and dangerous. "Congratulations. You wanted to warn me about becoming 'jagged' or losing my sense of love. But instead, you’ve managed to do something else entirely."
She tilts her head, her gaze sweeping over you with a possessive clarity. "You have broken me. And the terrifying part is... I think I prefer it this way. And I want it again, for you to do me as you wish."
