Where do they find a crowd?
Underground Boiler Club
Our screens dim side by side, the alley's chill seeping through my jacket as I parse the steps. A low-resistance crowd. Bar patrons, it says. But where? The dive district's too chaotic, too spread out, and my mind races through grids of options. A packed lounge, a subway platform at rush hour. Shared weaves on strangers, layering commands like invisible architecture. It could work, but locating that ambient throng feels like tracking shadows.
Kira's brow furrows behind her glasses, her finger tracing the edge of her phone as she rereads the script. "This convergence thing... it needs bodies. A group, close enough for threads to overlap without fallout. Not some random street corner." She pockets her device, shifting her weight against the brick, the motion practical and fade into shadow. "You got spots in mind? Somewhere low-stakes, easy to slip into?"
I shake my head, the symbiote's hum a faint approval in my veins, urging momentum. "Not offhand. Your turf since the ping hit you first." Neutral ground for now, but curiosity pulls us deeper, a tentative alliance forming in the negative space between agents.
Her tentative smile sharpens into something resourceful, eyes lighting with an idea. "There's this spot. Underground boiler club, semi-secretive, tucked under an old warehouse on the edge of the district. Calls itself The Forge. Boiler room vibes, all steam and pulse, but curated. Beautiful people, mostly. Models, artists, night owls who chase the edge without questions. Perfect for a test crowd. Close-knit, dim enough to weave without prying eyes." She pulls out her phone again, thumbing a contact. "I know a guy at the door. Gareth. Did some freelance tech for him last month. He'll vouch, get us in smooth."
We move together, her lead cutting through side streets that narrow like veins. The city's underbelly awakens as we go. Graffiti bleeding into fresh tags, bass thumps echoing from basements. Ten minutes stretch to twenty, our pace syncing without words, the app's steps burning in my pocket like a shared secret. She texts ahead, and by the time we reach the nondescript steel door on a derelict block, it cracks open before we knock. Gareth's a broad-shouldered shadow, nod to Kira, stamps theta ink on our wrists. Entry granted, no questions.
Inside, The Forge unfolds like a fever dream. Darkness swallows the edges, pierced by erratic light shows. Strobing blues and crimson lasers slicing through synthetic fog, casting bodies in fractured glows. The air hangs heavy, laced with sweat, perfume, and the metallic tang of dry ice. Music throbs from hidden stacks. Deep house remixes laced with industrial beats, bass rumbling through the floor like a heartbeat, urging hips to sway in rhythm. VIP booths curve along velvet walls, occupied by lithe figures in minimal leather and silk. Women with razor-sharp bobs and thigh-high boots, men with sculpted jaws and unbuttoned shirts revealing inked torsos. A dance floor pulses at the center, writhing with twenty, thirty beautiful strangers. Sweat-slick skin catching flashes, laughter mingling with moans that blur into the drop. Steam vents hiss faintly from deco pipes overhead, evoking the boiler's heat, everything alive and electric, **** in the haze.
Kira leans close to be heard over the swell, her breath warm against my ear as a laser sweeps our faces. "Crowd's ripe. Low resistance in here. Everyone's already half-lost to the vibe. Your move. What's the plan?"
What is the plan?
