A little under a third of the population firmly believed the ubiquitous use of ectoplasm technology had caused Earth to come under attack by entities from another dimension, while a little over a third were quite adamant that there was no such thing as ghosts, everyone else was on the fence or did not spend much time thinking about it. Most people had enough problems and did not need to add 'monsters from another dimension who secretly mind control and feed on humanity' to their list of things to worry about.

In the cutting edge world of ectoplasmic technology, Fenton Works might not be as big of an operation as Master's Plasmics, but those in the know knew that Zack and Maddie Fenton were the best ectoplasmic engineers on the planet and the foremost experts on Transplanar Geometric Theory.
On top of their inventions, the married couple's YouTube channel has hundreds of thousands of subscribers and they are sponsored by Raid Shadow Legends and DeleteMe. The pair have attracted millions of views from people who cannot get enough of the Fenton's crazy inventions, only some of which had exploded in dramatic fashion. People from all over the world tune in to watch Zack and Maddie as they Livestream their ghost hunts.
Zack and Maddie might not be billionaires like their friend and business rival Gregor Masters, but the Fenton family had enough to keep food on the table as they worked on their greatest invention yet, a portal to The Ghost Zone.

One summer afternoon, Randy Fenton was down in his parents' laboratory to grab a package of beef jerky. Randy found it frustrating how his parents were constantly re-arranging things, it made it impossible to find anything.

Randy did not know what happened. One moment he was looking for snacks getting psyched up to play Hell Jumpers III with his friends Booker and Samantha when there was an explosion.
When Randy came to, he was covered in goo. He had snowy white hair, and glowing green eyes. As he freaked out, Randy discovered he could walk through walls, disappear, and fly.

Randy soon learned the terrifying truth for himself. Ghosts are everywhere, feeding on the psychic energies of innocent people. Many of them go about disguised as humans while others lurk about, invisible to the masses, but not to Randy. It was then that he knew what he had to do. He had to enslave all the ghosts who were coming through.

He was going to catch them all, because he's Randy Phantom.
